Ok so I am a little late on this thing. I was reading the first few pages of the thread. I found a board shark on craigslist here for $50. I would like to get a rc surfer. So I saw good and bad about these and wanted to konw if I should get it. He said it is still in the box never used.

HELP.. I just bought a new in box RC Surfer, Board Sharks.  The surger goes forward and back, but the surfer does not turn.
With the cover off, the small rectangular plasic piece that controls the surfer does not move when I use the remote contoller.
It hums but no movement.

Can someone provide a possible solution for this?
Has this been a common problem ??

I have several sharks and have made only modifications from deck up. Happy with turning now even with him epoxied still. I want to up grade the motor, servo, esc, etc. Hope you can help. Hi Guys

Just thought I would take a peek to see whats been going on the RC surfer world. I'm taking some time off from my Lisa surfer over the winter months now to work on some of my other wonferful projects: RC Motorcycle, Airplanes and a SnowMobile. I'll be back in the Spring to work on my Lisa.

P.S
I blew the motor a month ago in a creek. Seems the water cooling tube going to the ESC cracked and little cooling was getting to the motor, other then the water going into the hull.

Have a good winter, and that sucks about the motor... I have seen hulls fill with water in a matter of a minute
when running and a leak from a cooling tube wasnt noticed.

Its amazing how much water is picked up from those little inlets.

We use a flush bulb to check that the cooling system is water tight before we run them.
motors/ esc & batteries arent cheap, and they hate being flooded.

Looking awesome Jocktime. Can't wait to see it air brushed.

I actually pulled my little guy out of retirement this weekend for 3 separate runs. I hadn't used it since the 11.1v lipo died on me. I used my older 7.2v Nimh battery. Goes ok and catches waves, but the motor needs the stronger 11.1v lipo to get it moving the way I like, so i've just ordered 2 new 11.1v lipo's off ebay. Can't wait to have him running properly again!

Hope everyone had a great Xmas/New Year, looking forward to seeing some new posts on here this year.

hi i have the exact same surfer guy  i paid $16.00 bucks for it last year at ocean state job lot (a discount store in massachusetts)   its alot of fun  has a 540 water cooled motor and the surfer guy moves his body to make turns  yes it has a rudder  i put a prop from a pro boat miss budweiser hydro on it and it is alot faster i also cut a bunch of stuff out of it and i modded the battery compartment  to work with a 7 cell nicad battery. i tried a modern esc and battery   truth be told i put all the electronics and the original motor back in it accually works better,   i have cut the surfer guy off and made it juat as  a boat  i made a setup that will tow my fishing line out on the lake and drop the line where i want it for fishing  i assume they are all over. if job lot got em,  they get allot of crap  kind of knock off stuff at that store  i gotta say for $16.00 its worth it just for the 6 cell batt

trust me on this dont waste your time and money on making this any better i removed most of the wax crap they had on the receiver and like i said i put the miss bud prop on it and a 7 cell nicad it flys for what it is   but if your gonna spend bucks on esc's motors and batts why not just do a normal boat kit?  seems to me a better investment and lots less hassel

good luck    im waiting for summer so i can do some trout fishing in the deep water of the lake where you cant cast a line out that far, and no boats are allowed on the lake  this lil boat is perfect and fast to bring the line out and drop it

Thats Cool That You Are Satisfied Using The RC Surfer For Sending Out A Fishing Line On A Lake...

BUT, That Is Not What These Radio Control Surfers Were Designed For, Which Is To Surf Waves In The Ocean.

When Surfing Ocean Waves, The Surfer You Got For $16 Is Going To Take Much More Than A Better Prop And Battery To
Get It To Perform In Ocean Conditions, And For Sure, It Will Need The Dude Figure To Self Right.

In All The Years Of My RC Boat Experience, I Have Never Found A Boat That Can Self Right
Once It Goes Prop Up Out Of Water.

I'm interested seeing this thread, I don't have an RC surfer as such, but I've had my custom designed stepped hull jetboat out in the surf a couple of sessions already, and it rocks! I've got a mini video camera on order from tomorrow, so I'll have some video on board and watching from the shore in another week or so, but this is some youtube of my boat in flat water:

It seems to handle the waves pretty well, sneaks through under the froth of the big ones, and jumps nicely off the edges too. On 2s, it's tame, though I can still get waves with a wee run up, but on 3S, I'm all over the waves, riding the knife edge of the wave, spinning and powering out of the froth, etc etc. It's great fun! It helps that my boat is short for it's width, there's not really any rocker, but the steps allow it to keep planing, even on the inside of the curved surface of a wave.

Hey Jock!
I am very impressed with what you have been able to do in creating the re surboards from scratch and the surfer dude.  Your craftsmanship is  very realistic and artistic. I enjoyed the photos and the past videos you've posted.  I've never seen better!   I looked for the how-to video, but didn't have any luck finding it.  Will it be listed under jocktime or rc surfer?  I don't know how much time it took for you to make this last one but I have to tell you, it was well worth it.   Halfwave

Kurt1954,
If you haven't got your boardshark turning problem solved yet, contact John with surfcurls and he can set you up with a metal gear replacement for a small fee.  It's definately worth it!   All original board sharks have the same problem with the plastic gear breaking.

have a used board shark without a radio. want to install a new rx and esc but might have to try to retain servo to maintain surfer movement. any info on hooking up existing wires to new futaba type rx plug would be appreciated. there are like 5 or 6 wires vs. the 3 on the futaba.

Seadog,
I've heard that question about which wires on the servo connects to the esc  by others in the past, and have not seen any replys from anyone indicating which wires go where.  If you need the stock transmitter to get you by until someone does reply with the info you need, I can mail you one for free if you are will to pay the postage to mail it.   I purchasesd several board sharks over the past 2 years and I 've never had a transmitter fail yet.  so I've got a few extra that are brand new.  Just let me know if yours is the red one with the  A B C or blue with the D E F frequency switch.  (the color striips on the board will match the transmitter color.)  I've also increased the run time by repacing the stock 7 cell nicd 8.4 volt battery with a elite 3300 sc 7 cell battery pack (nimh) from cheapbatterypacks.com  Batteries cost about $26 each and if you buy 2 or more shipping is free and you get them in less than 10 days.
