Laser singles are comparable with OS and Saito singles in power and characteristic.

That means not with YS.
YS is a high power turbo engine best suited for aerobatics. You pay for it with expensive fuel and operating troubles (my experience with the 110)
The Laser is on the other end of the character line. Not so extreme in power, but ultra reliable, durable, trouble free. Once set it wil run allways and keeps running.
In my experience power output is very close to OS and Saito. The twins are something special. At idle they sound like a Harley full power the high tone of the multi-cilinder, very nice, low vibrations

It's horses for courses. If you're flying pattern aerobatics or 3D then I would say go for YS or Saito . But if it's a scale aircraft that you have it's no contest - Laser everytime.

The Laser has been specifically designed for scale applications.
Carb and exhaust at the rear , rear mounted pushrods giving a very narrow front profile and height.

In terms of output the Laser will not compete with a YS. But is on a par with OS and Saito.

The one thing in a Laser that no other engine can compete with is the reliability and quality of manufacture.

Obviously here in the UK the Laser is very popular and also comparable pricewise with OS and Saito. You guys in the States will have to pay more for a Laser than something from Japan.

But if you buy one I guarantee it will take pride of place among your collection. You will know that you have THE best 4 stroke engine.

Everything Marcol said.

Unmatched attention to detail, quality of materials, quality of fits and machining,
inspired design (not an updraft carb to be seen ... thankfully; and a sensible silencer that doesn't intrude, and has the best, simplest fitting system).

The power of my Laser 70 on nil nitro matches a standard OS 70 on 5% nitro. I believe the power difference is more to do with low nitro fuels mostly used for these engines, than any design features.

For power comparison
My 150 on 8% nitro
APC 16*8: 8600 / APC 16*10: 8100
My 200V on 8% nitro (with these extra pipes on the muffler, see model previous page)
APC 16*12: 8300 / APC 16*14: 7800

I ordered a Laser 180s last week through Proctor. Does anyone have the 180? And what props will it swing? I can't understand why Laser won't update their web site to include specs on the 180s and 360 twin, they've only been out for about six years. I saw some 180 & 360 info on a German web site but can't find it now.

The 180 and 360 are quite new only a year or two. However it surprises me too that when you make such beauties the info and pictures on the site are that marginal.

I have always wondered how the Laser would run with a fuel tank in the traditional position inside of the model. The Laser carb is high, up on the head. Making the tank centerline and the spraybar centerline might be a bit difficult.

With scale models there often is that amount of space to locate the tank correctly. 9 out of 10 aerobatic and sport-aerobatic models the cilinder is pointing down and will give no problems.

My club mate has a Laser 180 in a DH Chipmunk and as you would expect it is a jewel. It is mounted inverted and idles, without onboard glow, at 1600 rpm. Ken swings a Master Airscrew 18 x 6 on his which is just perfect.

We always have a laugh and say that if it doesn't start first time we'll send it back. But it hasn't let us down yet. A truely magnificent engine.

When you get your 180 you'll know that what we are saying is not a lie

Jay, I made a mistake in saying that I ordered WildCat 5% with 18% lube, it is WildCat 5% with 16% lube, I see that LASER recommends 15%, the 16% should be close enough. I know that the 16% works great in my RCVs. The fuel is arriving tomorrow and the engine in a couple more days.

I have four gallons of 15% nitro Wildcat ordered through my local hobby shop. I don't know if he ordered the 16% or 18% lube. Either will work. At 6,000' elevation, 15% nitro helps my borderline WW1 models. I spent 20 years racing R/C hydroplanes. It got to the point where to be competitive, you had to run a minimum of 60% nitro. I always mixed my own fuel and used a product called Nu Formula Racing Castor from a company called Hi-Speed Products in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The oil was so good that we could reduce the oil content down to 11% with 60% nitro. I still use the castor and always add a couple ounces to every gallon of synthetic lube fuel that I buy. It's probably is a waste of time but old habits are hard to break.

Jay, engine received in fine shape, I'm pleased as punch, Thankyou. Running it will have to be a back burner project for now, I've three other engine projects in front of it to handle as I recuperate. Thanks again, Dave

I have not been able to source the aluminum bodied carbs used on the Laser 200 twin.

What do you guys recommend as a suitable replacement?
