i am looking at new .18 nitro engines. all the O.S. engines have power ratings that are in PS. What is PS, and how does it relate to horsepower?

no its not a mistake. PS means "Pferdestärke" in German which means 'horse strength'. Basically its the metric system of measurement of HP as opposed to mechanical HP & is ofetn used in Europe. So in other words, when you see 'PS" it effectively is the HP. It is however roughly 98.6% of mechanical horsepower.

Having said all that, when you see a HP rating for an engine, it should be taken "with a grain of salt" because they are most often totally incorrect. This is why a lot of major engine manufacturers dont bother releasing output figures. It should only be used as a rough guide.

This is true hp on these little engines is only because they rev so Hi. If the seller of the engines would give you a graph of the hp or touque you could tell more. Just because it says it makes 1.48 hp at 28 000 rpm (hypethicaly speeking) dosent meen it will be fast. Because it might not work well at low rpm like alot of off road cars need as well.

yeah its all a marketing game. Supprises me that companies like Sirio & RB dont publish HP rating for that exact reason that they mean little but then you get novarossi, the worlds most famous nitro engine manufacturer, DOES publish so-called HP figures. This probably goes a long way in making novarossi the most sought after engine I reckon.

Any HP ratings that they give are calculations only. I have never heard of a Dyno small enough to accomidate those engines or even who would bother except guys like us who would just like to know Maybe we need to start an RC engine chart and give ratings, some got webbels and some don't

yeah I only use them as a guide and thats it. I suppose it all comes down to how they calculated the "so called" power output. Most test I know are down with the entire car sitting on a dyno but perhaps these companies test the "raw" power output without any things like a flywheel dragging it down. Fuel type as well is also a factor and I would say that all their in house tests are done with 30% high quality race fuel, which makes a hell of a difference.

There is a company in Cali that dinos nitro engines. I can't remember the name though, TST might know the name of the company. There are dinos built for nitro engines. I would think if you dinoed with the same fuels and used controled group and a not controled group you could find the differences and come to an intelligent average HP of some sort. Like mozzy said though, there are ALOT of differences that could drag an engines HP down, bad care, cheap fuel, miss matched exhaust.

First registered Dynomometer for cars in the State of California was in San Mateo in 1962 or 3 and in 1968 it proved to the public that the only factory stock engine with 105 octain gas that put out more horse power than its cubic inches was the 275 horse 273cid Chrysler engine. Thats when Chevy claimed they had a 350 horse 327cid engine and it turned out to be about 300 horse engine. That was a lot of fun back then as it would be now if for no other reason but Braging rights and advertising for better sales. I think if there were a Dyno out there for these little 30,000 rpm engines every company that makes an engine would be out there trying to be #1 to help out there sales. I read an article about how in Japan they had developed a Dyno for the 2cycle small engine but had to admit that it was flawed after some extended testing, or it after they tested the Italian and American engines. LOL

Oh and I liked the heck out of watching Dino peeling out when he took off running guess he didn't have much Horse power though
