PilotLight -> VPP Tail Rotor??? (3/10/2007 11:49:39 PM)

Has anyone tried a Variable Pitch Prop system on the tailrotor of an electric heli. Wouldn't it be better than fixed pitch and easier than using a belt or torque gear?

I thought thats where VPP planes came from (the heli guys), but just noticed I haven't seen a heli with a VPP tail.

How would you mix it? You would have to go seperates and a new controller for sure if it was even possible.

You'd have to hook up both speed controls to channel 3 via a Y-harness of course the tail speed control would have to go through an HH gyro first. Then use channel 4 for the servo that controls the rudder linkage. It could probably be done, but it seems kind of redundant.

Its been done, and it works.

Am I missing something? Wouldnt a belt driven be better?

Yeah it works but they've already burned up a brushless tail motor and esc running it in idle up mode. It is a cool idea but I don't think the tail motor needs to be running at %100 or close to it since it has variable pitch. Get that worked out and you'd be on to something great.

That is pretty cool, however it is still requires alot of electronic equipment, that can glitch, overheat/overload and fail without warning.
Having SEVERELY abused the BDT for the past 6 months, and having NO issues with it, other that burying the CF tail blades into dirt & rocks.
I'm still on the original belt, drive cog, idlers. Had to replace the tail box plate after a hard crash (snapped-off pitch control mount), but that has been it.
I flew my buddies BCPP last weekend, and remembered quickly how much the EDT w/rate gyro system SUCKS! Piro's lacked "POP" and tail response nose right lagged behind, left was OK. Too bad for him that the BDT for the BCPP cost more than the heli itself!
