Well.........I'm slowly getting closer, but no flight report to give. All surfaces and servos mounted, Saito .72 mounted. Gotta get the bat and radio gear installed, and haven't started on the cowl yet. But, so far so good.

Mando...........

Well you know..........if it wern't for the rock pile and the honey do's......you get the idea
Actually I'm getting pretty close right now, maybe maiden flight by next weekend. I've got the new Saito .72 broke-in on the engine stand and now mounted on the Zlin, I think I'm done hacking on the cowl with the remote fuel port the last thing to do to that, and I think set the throws and check cog and it'll be ready to go. Oh yeah, need longer control horn screws for the ailerons, there're just a smidge too short.
Anyway, I think I might do a short build and flight report after I get it in the air, since I haven't see much review on this plane anywhere.

I finally started building my Zlin today. I have all of the surfaces in place and hinged. It's on it's wheels waiting on the radio and engine. That should be done tommorow. So far it's a straight forward build.

Looking forward to the flight report Mando.

Well........The Zlin flies I've set it up with the recommended throws, and am glad that after the range check at the field and right before the maiden flight, that I set dual rates at -65%! Very responsive this one is! All the first flight trim required was some down on the elevator, and some left aleron. Wants to pull hard left on take off. Got some take offs and landings in to get past first flight gitters. Gonna have to do somethig about the landing gear though. This plane lands like a feather and the landing gear still won't hold it's shape. The metal is too soft with absolutely no memory! Also when I got back to my shop, I unloaded the plane and set it on a work table and the plate that holds the gear on the plane let go and colapsed on it's belly. WTH, come to find out that the hot melt that was used on the inside of the plane had gotten soft and just let go. So......Scraped all that off, got epoxy and glass filler curing now, and am shopping for some worthy landing gear. The Saito .72 has more than plenty umph for this plane!! Maybe too much, but I like it that way I can see some good manuvers with this plane.

Mando..........

I'm all in. It's a great looking plane and probably looks better in the air. Is it a flat out acrobat style? Wondering about capabilities with an OS 55AX. Not too concerned about weak spots, as I usually try to reinforce all ARF's, but how is that ChinaCoat holding up? Sell me one boys. I want a another plane!

NirtoModels previous customers: I've never delt with them before. How is the CS?

China coat seems to be OK, I had a couple areas that didn't want to tighten up like I like. I'm like you, I like to reinforce with all ARFs, but this one failed in an area that I couldn't get to. Glass filled epoxy and used esin for fuel proofing, put dry weight at 6 lbs. 1 oz. Haven't had a chance to call on cust service, but I here they're slow at times. Shipped this one quick enough though.

I've have had GREAT luck with the ChinaKote

First I use a heat iron to remove any wrinkles and help adhere the coating...

Then I apply a few layers of Top-Flite ClearKote either on the completed plane or the individual parts.

This seals the ChinaKote and prevents fuel from creeping in.

It works great to prevent the trim from lifting, etc. after many many flights.

Got the Zlin back together this weekend. Laminated the landing gear with some 1.5 mm carbon fiber to stiffen 'em up and repainted with yellow. Also epoxied the gear plate back on with some reinforcement to boot. Maybe will do good now.

I read that you could put the landing gear in the oven and heat treat the metal. The writer didn't say what temperature but aluminum melts at about 600 degrees and your typical oven only goes to 450. It would be worth the try. Does anyone out there know about heat treating metals?

That's basically "tempering" the metal.

It will make it stiffer.

However I've found that I prefer to have the gear bend out on hard landings, as this tends to absorb the impact, and makes me learn to correct myself so as not to do this again.

As long as the gear is not so weak that it bends during a soft landing...

Mando,

I like the looks of the gear modification. I hope it helps the flimsy gear issue, if not it sure makes it look nicer. How did you attach the carbon fiber to the gear?

On my Zlin, I have all the servo's in, except throttle. I started replacing all of the hardware. I was going to use some of it, but after striping a blind nut I decided might as well replace it all. I guess I might just be too picky. The MVVS .49 is mounted. I went inverted, exhaust clearance issues on the side. I am still pleased with the build.

Hey, Thanks.
I stripped the gray paint off with a 100 grit table belt sander, cleaned with alcohol, then used 30 min. epoxy to stick the carbon to the aluminum. Returned to the belt sander to flush and round the edges a little bit. Masked the carbon with tape and spray painted the gear.
I like using carbon fiber when I can. I bought me a big bag of scrap pcs off of sleaze bay a couple years ago, that has different thicknesses and colors. I changed the push rods and still don't think there're rigid enough, so I gonna put on a couple cf rods with titanium ends on 'em, for the elevator and rudder.
