Hi,

I'm working on a hobby project and I've heard that the Dewalt hammerdrill varies speed based on how hard you squeeze the trigger. I also noticed the large metal box inside all the Dewalt battery packs. I've heard it suggested that this is some kind of simple motor controller, a charge management system (and that the recharge station is actually just a simple current source), or a combination of the two.

I'm wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to mess around with the original pack electronics to test it out. If it is some sort of simple PWM controller it could be very useful for budget conscious hobbyists. On the Dewalt support page they have a diagram of the hammerdrill that looks like the trigger is wired to the battery itself through a few of the prongs on the pack's plug. This would seem to support the theory that it has some kind of motor control built in.

Any light that you guys could shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

The DeWalt pack does have a motor controller, but I don't know of anyone who has tried to use it on an airplane. I suspect that it is set up for low speed and high torque.

Thanks for the response. Actually, I was intending to use it for a scooter or other random projects. As far as a RC vehicles go, it might be better suited for less weight intensive projects like RC cars/trucks as the pack electronics is supposed to be a little heavy.

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to use the internal controller in the battery pack. Like you, I thought it might be an efficient way to power a bike or scooter without the need for an external controller. With two external resistors and one 50K potentiometer you can accomplish this, however the battery internal controller has some problems for traction applications. First off, its noisy due to a low frequency PWM signal. Secondly, there seems to be a current limiting feature in the controller that can't be adjusted. So, when I tried running a 400W hub-motor, acceleration was jerky and slow. Once I was up to speed things improved.

Let me know if you are still interested in pursuing this. I can send you diagrams on how to attach the external components.
