I got one of these 53MM engines already mounted in a plane. My throtle and choke linkages are at the bottom of the carb. Would this indicate that the previous owner had allready fliped this carb?

The first flight with my radio gear with this bird will be as soon as I can get to the field in the AM Hope All goes well.

Thanx again Tom and your wife for your help. Going to make for a great day tomorrow.

Thanks for the info for the mustang. I have talked to Ralph about a G62. I can get one from him for $500. I was checking out alternatives. The 53, DA50 and DL50 look like it might be a player. I am at 6700-7000 ft so the G62 from Ralph might be the best option. I am still looking. The DA with omuffler is a little more than I want to pay.

Thanks for the response.

Your altitude was the clincher. Combine that with the weight and the 62 wins out easily. The only real difference betwen the DL and the 3mm is a few ounces of weight.

You're welcome.

Bluemagic,

When the 3mm engine is mounted inverted the carb will be on the right side of the plane (as viewed from the cockpit), sitting relatively high, with the choke and throttle levers mounted on the bottom. The needles will be pointed towards the firewall at an easy to adjust upwards angle. This is the engine in it's stock form.

When the reed block is rotated then the arms will be above the engine when the engine is mounted inverted.

Don't rotate the reed block if it is not necessary.

Tom -

Is the fuel spitting from the carb going to weaken the front end of the airframe? Will a velocity stack help? What can I use to clean the bare plywood and then seal it up?

I've had varied success with velocity stacks. In most cases there was still fuel being drawn from the carb by low pressure air moving past the opening. You can use alcohol to clean the firewall. If you get most of it off then thinned epoxy can seal the wood making any clean up later easier and prevent ony more oil from entering the wood. If you live in an area where you can buy the stuff Balsarite will seal over wood where it still contains too much oil for epoxy to stick.

In most of my stuff there's always been some "blow by" from the carb and so far the 3mm I have doesn't appear to to be doing any more than any other engine. The addition of a home made air filter would help lessen the amount. With mine just about all of the residue is on the cowl directly opposite the carb opening. Another thought for those so inclined would be to make a small balsa or whatever "wall" just large enough to block fast moving air from going past the carb. It could be attached to the inside of the cowl using epoxy and a small piece of fiberglass. A problem that could come up in doing so is the the diaphragm air pressure could be effected, changing the way the engine ran at one level or another. This would be something to try just to see how it worked, and made easily removable if it did not or interfered with diaphragm operation.

A velicity stack will probably help, I have never seen this problem before.

Tom, did you not notice this problem with the motor I sent back to you? It was spitting a large amount of fuel, particularly when the cowl was off. With it on it was spitting, but not as much. I know you said you ran out of time trying to work on mine, but I didn't know if you have gotten back to it. BTW, your engine (the one you sent to me is running very very well. Was a tiny amount of work to reroute my throttle and choke servos. I had so much fun flying the Sukhoi and 3mm motor. It really does produce a lot of power for its size, and the Sukhoi is a stunner in the air.

P.S. Are we gonna swap back or what? I know you rushed yours out to me and I appreciate that very much... Like all others have said before, your customer service is stellar!

I don't understand the spitting problem as I've never had mine do this even slightly. Sounds like the blow by over the carb inlet may be creating a vacuum effect and drawing raw fuel out of the carb. Seems strange if should do that. Anyway, with regards to sealing the bare wood, try brushing on two to three coats of min-wax polyurethane on it. I put this on my planes during the build and have actually used carb cleaner on a rag to clean off the surfaces later will no ill effect on the wood or coating. It really does work well.

Fired up my 3MM 53cc this past saturday. I had to adjust the high needle just a little bit and it was off flying. It took a little bit to get it fired up the first time, but after that it fired right up. It kept getting stronger each flight (3 in total). It has a lot of power to pull around the SU-26. It's going to great when it's finally broken in and the needles are where they should be.

Flew the su-26 with the toc 53mm all day sunday for the first time and it was the honestly the easyest to start plane there. yes folks it trully is a one flip start after the first run even after waiting for me to finish lunch and fly every gasser plane at the field. we had 7 gas planes out there and we all took turns passing the transmitters around. One thing I realy liked about this setup was the fact that it trully does run the same inverted as it does right side up all my other planes had a ritcher run inverted. I wont be fliping the carb on this one and she did swing the MSC 22-8 with authority may not break all the records but who wants to break records with an engine that breaks the bank as well ats its parts some of these so called state of the art motors have cost me far more than there high dollar value in busted wood and fiberglass. Ill do my best to get 100 hours on this bird and report back. Has anyone got a 85" left wing for a cap 232 a high dollar engine flame out has destroyed mine. and if by chance you see a lower wing and landing gear for a Ultimate that same motor has laied claim to them parts as well. But in all seriousness the one flip and she is running thing has allways made me think that the guy saying that is fueling his plane and starting it ASAP this isnt the case here this thing sat a long time and would just fire right up to the point some of the guys where cussing at me while the fliped and fliped and fliped. Thanx again Tom For helping me out and making sunday one of the most enjoyable Days ive had at the field in some time.

I have a lower wing for my demised ultimate (yellow/black scheme)....unfortunately, I stripped half the covering to look for damage...wing looked good except the interplane strut mounting tabs are busted off flush with the wing. I believe my gear is also in good shape....drop me a PM if interested.

Well, mine sure runs nice, but I'll guess that wth about a gallon of fuel run through it, several ounces have ended up on my firewall and engine box.
