Yes, the Stihl was in the tested group. If the engine is kept relatively cool and not run lean you're good to go but if you run hot frequently you can easily stick a ring. It was about middle of the road and will generally be fine to use. Funny, but I found out the same thing with one of my engines long before the performance tracked testing was done.

Is that test data available? Or at least a list of the brands etc. Would be nice to see some of the brands that were on the list. This would help in finding a good oil in Calgary - Canada.

No, it's not available. It was performed by a privately funded test group.

My club just adopted the IMAAC sound standards (96db?). I don't own a DB Meter of any kind and would rather not buy one if it is not necessary. I figured many on this forum are in the same position and could share info efficiently. Will I need to buy a cannister to replace my stock muffler? I'm running a 22 x 8 carbon fibre prop and a 23A Vess so there is no prop rip. Here are the club details:

The sound level will be measured over Grass with a maximum sound level of 96 DB using a Radio Shack sound meter set on slow response and using the A scale. Any other meter will need to be calibrated against one of the club meters before it can be used.
The measurement will be made at a distance of 25 feet downwind from the spinner centerline. The meter will be at a height of 24 inches above the ground. The meter will be held parallel to the propeller and 1-2 feet behind the propeller disc in the interest of safety.
Proper and secure restrain of the model must be performed during the test and all spectators must be well behind the model.

Just a question... if you are taking the reading from 25 feet behind the plane (spinner) - how does the 1 to 2 feet away from the prop disk and parallel to it fit in?

It's not 25 feet behind the plane, it's 25 feet away to the side, just slightly behind the plane of the prop. This is all standard IMAC stuff.

You might get away with a CF prop but that Vess prop won't cut it. Great 3D prop but very loud.

Just have to say Tom -

My 53 is STILL a great engine. After sitting since October, I finally got my Edge out to field today. After wetting the pump diaphragm with fuel and priming the fuel line, it took seven flips to get it to idle. After a 3 minute warm-up is spun the Bunny 22X8 up to 6900, idled down to a impractical airframe shaking speed. Never touched a needle and it flew for 30 minutes today without so much as a hiccup. Thanks for making these things available and working so hard to make them great!

Mine is in one of the first Hondas and she spun up this season with a roar. However I did get a hickup not sure what is causing it any Ideas?
I get this plane in a inverted flat and I get the sticks mashed over to the right and full down elevator and full power. If I get into this from a virtical climb it is a sweet thing to see. The plane will just about spin in its own space and almost hover. Im waiting for the new reed blocks to come out to see if the added horse power will hold it in place. I also feel a prop change is in order I have a Vess on it now and Im note so convinced this is the prop for the honda. Any how its off to the field in a few hours no rest for the weary.

Here's a quick "new guy" question...3MM 53 starts well, Idles well, will throttle up smoothly. However. if I try to go from idle to full throttle quickly, it will cut out and die. If I catch it quickly enough and back off on the throttle, it'll pick back up and continue running. Too rich? Too lean? First gas engine. I will go downstairs and grab the manual but thought this would be a quicker way to get feedback from experienced users. Thanks for your help =)

The low speed circuit is probably a little lean.
