I got out and flew my yak with the new 53 on it today. so far I am quite impressed with it, it started up easily and only took some minor tweeking on the needles to get it running good albeit still running a little rich.....only got in one flight because the plane was a little more tail heavy than I like.....I had the perfect "hands off" harrier the entire flight which made the landing a little interesting. But the engine ran very well and I hope to get some more time on it tomorrow.

What Yak do you have it in?

A very well abused TOC yak.....from back before they became aviation models, toc extreme and now sd models. This is now the third engine I have had on that plane.

Al,
Been subscribed to your thread, glad you are back at it . Sent an e-mail to BCMA after our PM conversation and still have not been contacted yet. I'm not sure that the Edge and the Extra have the same firewall to cowl front distance I'm getting about 7 1/8" on my Extra. I was hoping to get something firm from someone, so I could order the correct length standoffs. That way once I decide who I'm going to buy the engine from I can go ahead and mount her up. The rest should be easier.

Prop bolt update:

I measured the stainless steel prop bolts that were shipped with the engine. Not only are they a marginal length but they appear to be 10-32 bolts instead of 5mm. 10-32 and 5mm will interchange in almost all applications, the 10-32 has a .012" smaller diameter. But in a high stress application it's better not to use them.

Anyone who wants new screws can contact me, I'll send out new ones that are longer and 5mm.

I would have thought I'd have some flight reports by now. Anyone?

Tom,
What length standoffs are required for this engine on the new production Extra 300 and can you supply them. BTW, there is a gigantic thread going about the DL50 and not much at all about the 3MM. I'd like to pull the plug on one of these, but as you stated there has not been much in the way of user feedback yet.

Everybody's prolly to busy flyin' and havin' a good time to waste any time writing. At the price of these things you can have a lot left over for gas. The car AND the plane!...

Stoney,

What you're noting about customer support in another thread is what it's all about. Weak support does not generate sales, and often brings up other issues that you don't need. I was offered one of these engines at a discounted, discount price to test them out, but I already have three 50's so I had to decline. If I was in the market for another 50cc class engine I wouldn't hesitate to buy one at the normal retail price. They're good engines, relatively light with excellent power, well designed, and have the distributor support to make the whole show work right. The heads up about the prop screws shows that the distributor really cares, and that's what it's all about in the end.

Silver,
Exactly, that's why I'm trying to gather as much information as possible. Unfortunately there is not much information available as you can see from what I have tried to find out so far .

I got a few flights on the 53 this evening....just got home actually. All I can say is WOW

I got the engine tuned in pretty good and this is the easiest starting engine I have never had, a couple flips with the choke on and it pops and a couple flips more its running......and after the first flight it started on the first flip every time. I checked the RPM's with my trusty hobbico tach and it was turning a "Bunny" 23-8 at 6550 on its third tank of fuel. I am running this engine on my trusty old AM yak that weighs nearly 18# and this engine has no problem lugging it around.

What brand prop was that? Also, I'm told the 3MM has less vibration than a DA-50, whats your opinion?

John

Its a "bunny" prop I got it from Tom with the engine. To me it looks like its made by NX / Bolly. I might add that it was the best balanced wood prop I have had in a long time It only took a little to balance the hub the blades were already balanced.

As far as the vibration being better than a DA, I don't know I have not run my DA 50 yet (soon very soon I hope). I can say that the vibration is less than the Evolution 58 I had...that thing audibly vibrated the entire plane. But without running the same prop on on the same plane with multiple different engines I would say that perceived vibration is subjective. the 53 definately does not have any more vibration that my trusty old ZDZ 50ng that I originally ran on the yak.

You don't need standoffs, just use some plywood donuts. You will need something like 1/2-3/4", someone else said they are using 1" which can easily be made from 2 pieces of 1/2" ply. Just cut 3/4" squares, drill a hole in the middle and you have a 1" standoff. If you really want to do something nice glue them together.

DL-50 looks like a good engine too, but who knows?

Not at the moment. Next shipment is due in about 10 days.

Combo with what?
