I was hoping to get some help on cutting fibreglass fuselages. Eg window panels, gear doors and hatches.

What is the best tool to use for straight lines and curves.

Status: offline 		A rotary carbide or diamond cut-off tool works magically in a dremel (available at the big box home improvement stores). Cuts like butter and stays sharp for a long time.

Status: offline 		For long straight cuts I use a fine tooth hacksaw blade. I shorten it and wrap some tape around one end for a handle. It is easier to control than an electric rotary tool.

Status: offline 		I just tried a pair aviation type tin snips on a hatch I made with 14 oz of cloth (several layers). I got the tip from someone else and it works great. I got mine at Home Depot. The nice part is I don't have to inhale the fibers being spun around from dremel although I did use the dremel for cleanup. He said he has used his for 30 years but I can't confirm that through personal experience just yet.

Status: offline 		a good trick if you are trying to cut wet glass before you layup (we use this on fullsize aircraft composite repairs) is to get some thick plastic (we use polyvinyl alcohol... it is kinda like heavy plastic, but the resin does not affect it) and sandwich your glass between the layers of plastic. use a sqeegee to saturate the glass and spueeze out the extra resin. you get a nice even layup this way. you can then use a sharp pair of scissors to cut out your shape. this way there is no fraying of the edges or separation of the plies in the glass.

I use my dremel. Its good to cut round-corner holes with the sandpaper-drum, then you just sand the part out, works for my. The bad thing is that there will be a lot of dust

Status: offline 		I bought my wife the Dremel router attachment for her Halloween tombstones, the stright router bit at high speed is the best I've found yet for doing most of my fiberglass cutting.
