Trying to figure out if I can get just the plastic gear for the tail drive, or if I have to get the complete shaft and everything. I managed to loose a tooth on the plastic gear while using the hardened main gear.

So which one of these is correct for a 450SE V1 with the hardened 1218 main gears?
HS1216, or HS1013-2S?

Or what is the part # for the gear by itself, and is it possible to press the bearings off, and replace just the gear?

Thanks,
Pete

I recently went through the same thing trying to figure out what gears to use. Joe at techmodelproducts.com set me straight on the subject...

HS1216, or HS1013-2S will work. The only difference is that the belt pulley is attached to the shaft on the HS1013-2S, and it comes not attached on HS1216

HS1013-2S is intended for those who have a split bearing block so they can install the assembly without removing the pulley.

HS1216 is intended for those who have a solid bearing block. You install the gear, then press on the pulley with some green locktite to hold it in place.

You can easily do the same thing with HS1013-2S, however by using a pinion puller to remove the metal pulley, then reinstall it with green locktite if needed.

I'd upgrade to the metal gear and shaft with new bearings and be done with it.... its only a few dolloars at www.techmodelproducts.com. It was a worthy investment for me. I stripped the tail gear (melted actually).

part number HS1153 gives you upgraded auto gear, metal tail rotor shaft/gear and the front gear with bearings for $16...no more worries...

Strange, my SE already has the metal shaft/gear in the tail as well as the front drive pulley. I ordered the 1216 to save myself the hasstle of pulling the pinion then pressing back on. It makes no sense 2 bucks more for the disassembled piece. My SE has the 1 piece bearing supports, instead of the 2 piece, don't know if that was an earlier design than mine.

I will also have to grind down the new drive gear so it does not hit the main rotor gear on the new one too I guess. There is an FAQ about that from wherever I ordered the new style main and auto gear.

OOps, my bad Pete. I missed the part where you had an SE...sorry . The one piece block is normal on the SE.

Two dollars more? www.techmodelproducts.com sell them for the same price $8.79 assembeled or unassembled. Where are yoou buying from?

P.S. I had to shave the plastic off my SE also. I just took an exacto knife and held it against the extra plastic piece while I rotated the tail gear took about two turns and all the extra was gone.

Well that new 2 piece job I ordered was a waste of money. I used the Green loctite as dictated in the manual, that did not work, tried using CA still not working right. No matter what I have tried the pinion keeps spinning on the shaft. Belt tension is not very tight. Yesterday I had enough after destroying the boom, stabilizer fins, and belt after the heli lost tail control in mid-air. After putting it back together i seems something is still not right, the battery got really hot after just a few minutes of flight, that tail did not want to stay put, and i was using almost 90% throttle to stay in a hover. I think perhaps my main blades have enough dings on them from eating dirt in that crash that they are generating too much resistance, or they are way out of balance/track.

I went back and ordered this:

$30 bucks, but it is easy to replace the gear if it breaks in the future. Also the metal pinion is attached with set screws.

Strange... I installed mine with green locktite, and it is holding it well... Perhaps there is a film of oil on the shaft, or inside the pulley that is preventing the locktite from working??? I cleaned mine with some rubbing alcohol before assembling it, and it is locking in there VERY tightly now.

Ah finless in his videos warned of the oils from manufacturing. That is probably what it is. I'll pull it back apart and clean it with alcohol loctite and put it back in to see what happens, Still will keep the new part I got because it is easier to swap out the gear if needed.
