Well, broke my landing gear today! Have no idea how it happened, never sat down that hard, never had a boom strike. Anyway, I'm stuck on my HDX450 until I figure out the head linkage (another story!) but when I had ordered my HDX450, I ordered an extra landing gear because I thought the stock one was plastic - well, the stock it stainless steel and anodized aluminum, so I doubt I'll be needing it any time soon - turns out it's a perfect bolt on replacement - holes line up and all! So, was having fun in the backyard in between shower squalls, and darn gear gets caught in the grass and tips the heli over - somehow broke a ball off the swashplate!! - Oh well, only $13 at HeliDirect! I had finally gotten my 7CHP set up for the Axe and was tuning it in a little. I used the setup for the 9C someone posted here, but I made my roll and pitch swash % 100% rather than the 65% suggested - way to calm and not extreme enough to get out of tight places (of which my backyard is full of!) I also modified my throttle and pitch curves a bit.

I was just reading an article yesterday abuot aluminum vs plastic, they say the alum blade grips wear out bearings quicker. After reading the article, I'm replacing all my aluminum blade grips with plastic to give myself a break point that I can control.

just my thoughts.. .

I know what you mean. I put metal balls on a couple of broken blade grips, great idea for future when I am not breaking so many. However, now I am replacing a broken see-saw and flybar carrier. I am going to eventually upgrade to CNC head parts minus the blade grips. For now, its inexpensive plastic.

unfortunately two of mine have all aluminum heads (mx400 and the T-rex) I know I've been pushing my luck with all aluminum, ,but I sooooo like the way it feels and the bling factor is cool, but I like the feel... but especially in the cold, I'm seeing a serious need for me to choose what breaks and with that I'm changing blade grips. I'll put the others in a drawer until summer, when I keep a heli together without crashing for a while then I'll consider putting them back on. Actually, no I won't I'm just going to leave them plastic.. .

Stratcat - what breaks with an all CNC head?

I was in the LHS yesterday, and talking to the young kid there that flies helis, and talking about plastic blades - he said he has only trash about 2 sets of blades!!! I guess some got it and some don't! But, the more I fly the much more confident I get - I start flying my way out of problems I get into rather than set it down - and it's much more fun!!

actually, I haven't broke anything in the head yet, in the MX, I'd just bent the mainshafts and that other one (damned brainfart).. and luckily (I actually thinks it flies that much better or was at least setup better) I haven't crashed my t-rex in the two months I've flown it.. whew...

I'm just thinking that I really need to go with the plastic grips, I have tons of them for the MX anyhow, and if I have a set for the t-rex, just for the ah **** or brainfart factor and a safety net... you know?

besides, I'm bored, built a crawler last week and need something to tinker with

a rock crawler... I've been slowly making things happen to change one of my trucks over, this sucker isn't fast at all, but it'll drive over rocks twice it's size

OK a little overkill on the explanation. Sometimes I just ramble on. Age has its privilege.

Apparently you haven't read too many of my posts.

Your info was well worth it. There was another thread back along that talked about replacing the z-bends with ball links. Sounds like a good mod.

Credit where credit is due. thanks for the inspiration HelisRule. After reading over 2000 posts in this and other forums, I remember reading about the idea. What I cant remember was if I had read where someone had actually done this. Seems the topic is revisited. Anyway I digress. At this point I want to offer my gratitude to all that have contributed to this and other threads. I have hope that I may yet fly this bird

Oh you will fly it. You have to start somewhere. Hey, I've had my Axe for about 4 months or so, and I haven't mastered a hover yet, but I've flown it around haphazardly, and crashed it with the same or better skill! I've gone through a set of blades, two main gears, a stabilizer hub, 3 feathering spindles, at least a half dozen blade grips, a tail boom and a flybar. Yet I keep coming back for more, and I just went out and bought a T-Rex. I guess I'm a gluton for punishment. But I'm expecting the T-Rex to actually be easier to fly. I do a heck of a lot better on a T-Rex in the RealFlight sim than I do with the Axe, and I can hover both of them in the sim. I think my problem with the real Axe is that either I just don't have it trimmed well, or there's something awry with the 3-in-1; I probably just need to spend more time trying to trim it up. Anyway, keep flying, or at least keep trying.

I also seem to remember something about replacing the main shaft bushings with bearings. This in mind I got some 6x10mm bearings along with a pile of spare parts to build a complete head, you know just in case. Not having a blade balancer yet (dubro spin balance on x-mas list )I put the spare head together, added the extra main shaft and slid on a couple bearings and wahlah, a poor mans head balancer. I built a simple jig to hold the setup on its side and over the edge of a table. After balancing the head, I added a pair of blades to the setup. Now my wings are in tune and my head is balanced, at least the one on my axe .

The main shaft runs on bearings I'm pretty sure.

I haven't pulled my frame apart to check, but the OE replacement calls out for bushings, could be a misnomer. Part #HMXE8403. But like I said I haven't separated the frame yet to check and the extra set of bearings are helping me keep my spare head balanced.

On another note, I just got my new prop reamer, 7mm, for the knitting needle tailboom. How does a blue CNC head with a gold tail boom sound.

I found a good alternative to main blades at helidirect.com they are plastic symetrical blades instead of the wood and are cheaper than the wood blades as well, they'd be great for begginner s or as an alternative to the expensive CF blades.

here's the link to the yellow set but they have white or black as well VVVVV
