Originally posted by Robodog8 Acrophobicflyer, Really cool flames! The colors look really good together too. The red trim outline around the flames is what makes it look really done if you know what I mean. Whatcha use for the red? Ultracoat like the yellow? I'd have to use a stencil to do flames like that.....Reminds me of watching the dude freehand flames on The Monster Chopper show....Looks easy until you try it yourself! Anyway, great scheme!
Thanks Robodog!! The colors are all Utlracote. Pearl Blue, True Red, Cub Yellow. I free handed the flames on the backing of the red for one wing. Cut them out, then trace them on the back of another piece of red so both sides match. Next tape them to the back of the blue, trace them out. Pull up the red and free hand inside the lines a quarter inch or so so the blue is smaller than the red. Since the soapy water trick won't work with Utracote, you'll have to be very careful and use very low heat to get the flames down with minimal bubbles. Don't try to get the flames to lay over one another perfect, 'cause it won't happen. Looks better if they are bit uneven anyway. Try it on some scrap balsa to get the feel. I practiced drawing flames until I was blue in the face since my last attempt at a flame job. Go to www.howtopaintflames.com. There's a section with printable flames to practice on. Plus there are loads of cool flame paint jobs to look at too.
