daven -> Torque Wrench (3/20/2007 11:59:35 PM)

I've looked at them several times, but never purchased one. I'm thinking about giving it a go, especially now that I will be moving to all new LS motors.

Has anyone seen or tried one of the Wiha brand torque wrenches? I see a lot of the Tork It type wrenchs, but I've always liked the quality of the Wiha stuff, and its not much more money. Plus they have some nice bit sets that would be nice to have.

The one I'm looking at has a torque range of 10 - 50 in/lbs and is adjustable in 2 in/lb increments. Comes with a calibration tool, and just looks like a nice unit. Should be good for both head bolts and glow plugs.

Heres a link:

Thoughts?

I,m with RANIERY. Your not going to get any better than the best tools in the world (SNAP-ON) If you want to be the best you need to use the best. [;)]

Go to torkit.com John Snider sold me mine in 1995 and it was well worth it. Still works even after the exploding tool box.

Oh Yea. Model 36 for $94.95. It's identical to the Matco for $175.

Thanks Tom,

If it works for you, its good enough.

I'll get one ordered.

AllanU -> RE: Torque Wrench (3/29/2007 1:20:09 AM)

Dave,

What are the torque settings for the heads and glow plugs on a Nelson. I was reading Darrol Cady's web site and it says to torque 11 inch-ounces for the head bolts and 33 inch-ounces for the glow plug. Does the torque wrench you suggest go that low? 1 inch-pound = 16 inch-ounces.

Here is a good torque measurement converter. http://www.srtorque.com/torqcon/tcio.html

daven -> RE: Torque Wrench (3/29/2007 2:38:44 AM)

Thanks for the post Al, the one I was looking at only went down to 10 inch pounds. I guess 160 inch ounces would have been a bit too much.

I'm going with the torq it, unless someone says the more expensive Snap on / Matco wrenchs are superior.

DMyer -> RE: Torque Wrench (3/29/2007 3:41:07 PM)

Here is an inexpensive alternative - a used high quality tool off EBAY. I bought two a few years back and they work very well.

daven -> RE: Torque Wrench (3/29/2007 3:49:58 PM)

Ok,

now I'm confused, those are rated in inch / pounds.

Are we really looking to measure in inch / ounces or inch / pounds ??

I know this came up a while back, but I can't find it, or remember the answer.

aseaholm -> RE: Torque Wrench (3/29/2007 3:59:56 PM)

Dave,

In-lbs. is correct unit for what we do, NOT in-oz. Shadel uses 12 in-lbs. for head bolts, not sure about plugs.

HighPlains -> RE: Torque Wrench (3/29/2007 5:02:19 PM)

I thought you mechanical weenies had changed the convention to lb-ft and lb-in instead of ft-lb and in-lb.

Mr. Cycles to Hertz.

djlyon -> RE: Torque Wrench (3/29/2007 5:42:06 PM)

I don't know about CHANGED convention but the proper convention is lb-ft and lb-in.

HighPlains -> RE: Torque Wrench (3/29/2007 6:07:53 PM)

I think the original British Unit was "ft-lb", and was PC'ed to lb-ft to match up with the SI unit about 20 years ago.

"Mechanical weenies"? You're on the wrong Web site, buddy.

Servos are measured in ounce-inches; head bolts are measured in pound-inches. So to make sure my torque wrench is in the correct range, I torque on a servo until the gears strip. Then I work on my engine.

garys -> RE: Torque Wrench (3/29/2007 8:14:39 PM)

Torque wrenches are over-rated. I just tighten everything down until it gets loose again, then it's guaranteed not to come out.. [;)]

aseaholm -> RE: Torque Wrench (3/29/2007 10:50:22 PM)

It's true the "correct" unit for torque/moment is lbf.-in, with force unit appearing before the length unit. HOWEVER, all the tool manufacturers use and label torque wrenches in.-lbs., ft.-lbs., in.-oz.. HA! Mechanical Weenie that Dibble... [:)]

You say tomAtoe, I say tomatoe...

I was simply trying not to confuse Norman any more then he already is. Get a couple Knob Creeks in the guy and he can barely remember his middle name much less in.-oz., oz-in, ft-lb., lb-ft... [:D]

GSchmidt, I use a 2 ft. cheater bar on a 3/8" inch drive ratchet. It was tough finding a 3/32" allen with a 3/8" drive, but they're out there, keep looking. Never had a head bolt come loose yet. Don't tell Shadel... [:)]

Gary - you have the best quotes - should fit nicely in my next article, assuming I have your permission?

Terryoc -> RE: Torque Wrench (3/30/2007 1:15:00 AM)

Try and get a torque wrench which torques in one direction so that you can use it to remove screws/plugs as well

After so many years of taking engines apart and reasembeling them I have come to beleave my hands are torq wrenches ,but the truth is it realy dose pay to use a good quality tw no matter who makes it. I uses to calibrate them while in the Navy. Acording to nationle bueru of standerds you should recalibrate any torq wrench once a year. [;)]
