I have been asked to fabricate these for a Stearman. The drawings say to build them out of hardwood to prevent wear through extensive use. These, however, will not see extensive use so I want to know if it's ok to use a quality grade plywood. It would be much faster for me and I'm likely to be doing them for free. It's my sister's plane, so maybe I'll get to log some time afterwards. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hi Randy; Good ply should be fine, but remember, it's the EDGE that must be true, something that is sometimes difficult after cutting the ply to shape. The ANGLE ACCURACY is the prime goal! I hope I'm picturing the same thing you are! Wear & tear? I'd think you would have to go through 100 or so planes before detecting any! (Unless you are using balsa!!!) Incidentally, the Stearman is a favorite of mine. I first soloed a Stearman in 1946 at Wings of Mercy Airport, Belleville, IL, where they taught flying missionaries! I was stationed at Scott Field, in radio op school. I had, at that time, about 15 hrs total time. He soloed me in 45 minutes, and gave me some of the best taildragger advice I ever got! I still remember his name, Phil Zampini, and still have my old logbook! It also tells me I was doing spins at TWO HOURS!!! The guy (Joe Rabassi), must have been nuts!! Oh well, I'm still in one piece, still pass the commercial medical, and turned 81 today! Lee Robinson W. Palm Beach, FL.

Happy Birthday, Lee. Hope you have many more. Are you still flying? (full scale)
