Well I was looking through the toolkit at the body's there and there was no Bell UH-1D (aka the Huey), so I'm gonna make my own. Before I start though, I have a couple of questions:

1) For the body makers out there, is there some piece of software specifically made to create the 2d net of a 3d shape? I've not really got much experience in making nets, so my approach right now is to make the shape in Blender 3d, then unfold and rotate the faces so the shape becomes 2d. Long and tedious I know.... I was wondering if theres an easier way?

2) For the people who design and make their own helis, a physics question. To get the body to look authentic, I'm gonna have to lift the tail rotor up so it sits on top of the tail fin, and possibly lengthen the tail. As the tail rotor is specifically used to rotate the heli (or keep it straight) I'm assuming its a matter of a simple torque equation, ie torque = force x distance..... by my reckoning increasing the length of the tail will amplify the turning effect of the tail rotor on the heli. Is this correct? Will it make the heli too twitchy, or give me loads of turn one way but limit the turn the other way? Will moving the rotor back and up throw the cg way off? The body will be kinda long so I could probably counter the cg effect by moving the battery forwards, I just don't wanna have to add any dead weight to the front to stop me flying in reverse all the time.

Anyway, heres a pic of the Huey body (version 1, it'll probably be redesigned before I'm completely happy with it).

Awesome idea, I was even thinking of building my own body when I actually find a Havoc Heli or a PiccoZ. Also, are you using 3Ds Max in that pic? ( I wonder because im thinking of getting it but I dont wanna spend 600 bucks on software that might be a peice of crap :P).

I'm using Blender 3d, if you want a commercial grade 3d program I'd recommend trying Blender, as its completely free. It's a little hard to learn as the interface differs slightly from what most commercial packages offer, but it has all the features of a $600 piece of software, exports and imports all the major 3d file formats, supports animation and scripting (with Python). For free its definately worth a look, you can get it at blender.org.... if you're skeptical about what a free 3d program is capable of, here's a model that I designed and rendered a while back using Blender....

Or you could get this kit to use as a pattern and then you'd have all the scale markings.
It's a work in progress for me.

What is the weight of the Huey shell?
Interesting concept if light enough.
