My old Quick 500 Viper only used one servo
It never had flutter, Ailerons are small.
Just tring to help with my experience, I guess we all fly differently-I'm a bit of crazy flyer, I like to Test the limits of speed with all my planes. Hence 2THELMT

I was wondering what '2thelmt' meant...I should have known! LOL

I was hoping to have mine done to fly tomorrow...but it's looking like I probably won't have it done by then. I tend to over-analyze things, and also tend to go over-board making things as neat as I possibly can...these are not good traits for Coroplast & PVC planes! Oh well, at least I have (4) of the best looking PVC horns you'll ever see! LOL

I'll throw a picture up when it is done...but it is nothing special. I'm building it almost to the letter, and not putting any graphics on it. I'm still not exactly sure what my profile fuse will look like, and if I don't think of something soon, it'll probably just end up looking something like a 'Hots'.

Just built a SPA3D this weekend. I used the blue pvc electrical boxes found at Wal-Mart (only 25 cents each!). Needed only two.

Yeah, these are great!

What engine are you using cpierre82? Do you know what your final weight was?

im using a os 46fx. i did not check the weight. I'm also using a smaller battery pack & a small RX, but the OS46fx pull it like a rag doll. I may stiffen up the tail section and
the wing some.

Well Tatoo, you seem to be the go to guy for these things!!! i just ordered a stack of coreplast from Harbor, in white, My question is, What are you using to achieve your great looking color schemes? Paint stick on or what? I am going to build a SPA3D unless you tell me another is better ( PQHOR or QUOR) intend to build the Gee Bee too cause it looks so cool. Going with the GMS 47 for power I think

Hey Tattoo thanks for the plans for such a great flyer!
We have made several flights, and the boys with the expensive 3D's, big 4 strokes etc. want me to make them a SPAD 3D.
I'm using a TT42 for power, and reduced the size of the wing and fuselage by 2" so it would fit in my sub-compact car. The plane lifts off in a few feet, power is reduced to 1/2 or less throttle for rolls, loops etc. The roll rate is WOW! with those 4" controls, and 3"(each way) of throw. Well, you said "As much as possible" on the throws. Elevator with that much throw is touchy, and will sure chase it's tail, but requires TLC when landing.
My 1st SPAD is still logging flight time which speaks to the strength of your designs. Keep up the good work!!!

Alvin

Daddyo,

The best thing I've found is the vinyl from the sign shop. They have every color imaginable and it is easy to apply. It is name brand too. My sign shop sells it to me for $2 a foot from a 2 foot wide spool. I've found that Sig decals work nice too. Just put a little windex down and then place your vinyl or decal. Then squeegie out the windex and you are set. It stays on for good. This is what is used on my PQHOR (which I love!).

No fancy stickers on mine yet...but I finally finished mine up, and hopefully tomorrow I'll get to test it out. I can't wait!

Mine is basically a stock 32x32 SPA3D. I used a tail skid instead of a controllable tail wheel, and used an OS 40FP for my engine. I may end up making a Mousse Can Pipe for it eventually. But figured I'd better try it out first before going through the trouble. It came in at 3lbs. 10 oz. (a couple ounces more than I was shooting for, but not to bad).

Good Job Romeo

Don't forget to add that positive spoileron. Giver' about 4° (up spoileron) and maybe 2° down on ele. Fly'er slow and hi-alfalfa.

Let us know how the smaller size handles. I've got an old, gummed-up .40SF that needs a job.

I got the Ailerons parallel with the bottom of aluminum channel right now...are you saying to adjust them up a few more degrees from there?

I also had my elevator set even...but the couple degrees of down sounds like a good idea for this type of plane.

I wasn't exactly sure what prop to start off with...so I'll just use the 10x4 that I had on my PBF with the same engine in it.

...And I'll definitely be flying hi-alfalfa!

Thanks for the tips!

Mark,

Nice plane! Dave McDonald told me that his favorite prop on a plane almost identical to yours was the 11-4.

*Yeah Romeo, your 10x4 (or better yet, as Goinstraightup suggested, an 11x4) will do just fine.

*If your ailerons are parallel with the bottom of aluminum channel, you may have your hands full on your initial flights. I've built 4 full size SPA3Ds and every one of them has required about 4° of +spoileron and about 2° of down ele, to stabilize (countless threads and posts will confirm this VITAL information to a successfull flying SPA3D).

*CG should be at approx 2-3 flutes behind spar (music wire).

*If possible, try to avoid full throttle take off's and be ready to back off on throttle to avoid excess vertical or even a tight take-off loop.

*Fly'er low'n'slow.

*And add some grafix, will'ya bro?!

Thanks for clarifying that...BUT YOU'RE A LITTLE TO LATE! LOL

First flight was fun & eventful...I got to Hover & TR (both unintentionally) accross the whole length of our field seconds after take-off!

It was a little breezy, and as soon as she left the ground her nose went straight to the sky (just like the PBF did). I cut the throttle, and by the time I added enough down elevator to bring the nose down she was already across the field...Hovering the whole way. Shortly after that the engine quit. So I got to see how it handled dead stick landings on the first flight to. Much better than the PBF. It settles in nice and soft. The next flight I started to see what it could do...

Elevators were slow and steady with no hint of it's stubby little wings rocking! It just floated straight down like a feather!

Flat Spins were very flat (more so inverted than right side up) but not quite as tight as my PBF...although I'm guessing they'll get better with time.

Hovers are effortless, and TR's seem like they would be easy if I wasn't at the sticks!

Harriers on it's own without any effort...and hangs motionless in the breeze (it'll even fly backwards in the breeze if you let it).

I couldn't get over how nice and slow the landings were!

...But then my prop came loose, and I was forced to land it!

I taxied out to the runway 3 times after that, and the engine quite all 3 times! The 4th time I trimmed the idle up a little to keep it running, and did a nice vertical take-off!

...unfortunately the engine stopped as it left the ground, and I couldn't flare in time on the way down!

Oh well...I just have to see if I can straighten out my landing gear (or just make a new one). But that's all that got damaged! I may have fried the engine when the prop came loose! But I have several more just like it waiting there turns.

It was an old FP that I had on a Trainer, a 4*40, a Profile Flatcat, and the PBF...so it was probably due to be replaced soon anyway.

I can't wait to get it back in the air (which will probably be either tonight, or tomorrow morning)...IT'S A BLAST!!!

P.S. - A funny story, too. All the oldtimers at the field today were making fun of it until I flew it...now I have to make 2 more SPA3D's for 2 of them!

I am gathering materials and have most everything, going to go with a hollow carbon rod, full span for spars also going to try out an old, but fresh, OS 45 FSR on this baby, I have turned my town upside down looking for coroplast, No Luck!!! I guess I will have to wait a week for my shipment from Harbor to arrive. I live in Lancaster California and we have 2 guys here flying these SPA3D s and they are having alot of fun.

I used Carbon Fiber Tubes that are actually shorter than the Music Wire Spars called out for on the plans. Although my SPA3D only has a 32" wing span, too. I had some scraps of CF tube left over from the spars in my electric 3dx fanfold plane and used them. Both were about 16" long, and fit perfectly!

Good tymes, Romeo. You think the little bad-ass is worthy of some slick grafix? Stick-um and post-um! >:-)>

Daddyo, check any plastick distributor in/around your area. My source is about 1-1/2 mi from my house and he'll sell me single 8'x4' sheets for 12 bucks!
