I received my DV from Chief AC and it sure looks good.How come the wing tubes are different lengths? The top wings are shorter but they have a spacer built into the cabines that equalize them .Also any experience installing a ZDZ 60? Any hints on building?

do a serch on double vision,all kinds of info,if you fly at high elavation go with the 60,if you want 3d performance.it's the best 50cc 3d bipe on the market!!!

The bottom wing tube is longer because it needs to span the width of the fuselage whereas the top wing tube only needs to span the 3" wing center section (you want 9" or so of tube extending into each wing panel regardless of what's between the wings). The build was pretty straightforward and unremarkable if you can figure out the less than stellar instruction manual. The only thing to watch is the cabane strut installation. The photos in the manual shows the old DV, not the new DV SE so the cross bar in the photo is backwards from reality. Make sure you use the longer of the 2 a-frame pieces to the front of the fuse and the shorter to the rear. Other than that, I found I had to open hatches in the bottom of the nose section in order to be able to do any installation work in the nose. Oh, and DO NOT make the modification to the stab that is shown in the manual. On the engine installation, I used a DA-50 like most folks so have no info for you.

Well after a 6 mo. layoff, I'm ready to maiden my DV/DA50. I ended up with only 2 aileron servos in the bottom wings, Hitec 5955's. Hope its enough, specially after reading TBM report on the 5955's losing torque when heated up. The upper ailerons are connected with 4/40 all thread covered with CF tube, I used 6/32 screws into the aileron trailing edges & Dubro threaded horn. I had to cut sheeting on the bottom & installed CA soaked hard balsa aileron stock for the screws to anchor. I also had to cut the elevators to allow for full 3-D travel & no rudder /elev binding, the Dubro screw horns were hitting the elevators. I did cut the excess off the screws but still didnt like the throws. Now that I'm ready to maiden, you cant find a DV new anywhere, Chip Hyde web site is gone-oh well, thats how it is in this hobby!!

Before the maiden, I yanked the PCM reciever & put a Futaba 7C FASST in, if flights 1-6 are any indication, I might go gas & never look back. I was thrilled with the Double Vision, Cg is at 9", weight is tad over 18lbs, DA50 /Zinger 22X10 ,tach readings of 7100RPM high, idle at 2500 or so. I should have known it was a bit too lean on the ground, the throttle transition was just about perfect, no loading up anywhere with each click of the stick. It quit with an inverted pass, but I was way up there, so no problem to dead stick it. I richened up the low end to the point where its 4-stroking at lower settings, didnt quit after that. I've leaned it out since, but not back to where it was perfect yet, will let it break-in first. I tried some harriers,hovering,HA KE, pointers & rollers(rolling harriers). I could not believe how effortless the harriers were, all with a rich running engine not yet broke in! Point rolls were sweet, no tendency to wander off course, did some 8 and 12 pointers too, NICE!!! Slow HA KE was very good too, one did roll out on me, but thats to be expected some times. That happens occasionally with all my planes,too much rudder, too slow, too much HA will do it every time. The only issues were cowl screws vibrating out and one cabane screw missing-an important one-holds the top rail to the wing center section, should be easy fixes, cant wait to get the DV back in the air!!! Chip--any chance you might come back with the DV!!????

wait till you try some walls then into a hover,i can get mine to slide vertical for about 10 ft. before it stops into a hover. always a crowd pleaser.

Thanks Bo-Bo, wonder what 425.00 in British pound comes out in American $$$?? More for sure, but still nice to know I can get parts or another one. Actually, I better go back & check if they even sell across the sea. It was a good day out, I loved the way it handled. For me the smaller planes are high in "difficulty pucker", low in "$$$ pucker", the gassers are high $$$$ pucker, lower in difficulty pucker. Add in the "presentation factor", maybe gas is the way to go! See ya this weekend maybe??? Leon is talking about a possible camping affair this weekend, you in????

My Giles was about the same as that, glad I didnt try that with the DV on the maiden, it only had one cabane screw, the other went by-by at some point on one of the flights. I remember the soft "feel" I got when tightening those screws,they never seemed to get really tight, I took it off and looked inside, there's a "T" nut in a strip of 1/4 ply on top of a block of balsa, you got it, the ply bends and crushes the balsa, it might have held if I would have used more lock-tite. Any way, I cut holes thru the rib ends and inserted pine beams up against the balsa/ply blocks after flooding the area with thin CA. Cant wait to get the DV back out, I want to see how it handles in the wind, thats been frustrating me with smaller planes & 3-d'ing.

I made some changes to the build & plane, here's what I did(it seems to be working just fine thus far):

1.) I didnt use any of the horns that were supplied, they dont allow for good travel,mechanical advantage and they bind with any lateral motion of the control arms, and worst of all, they are not adjustable. I used Du-Bro HD screw horns.

2.)I went with only 2 aileron servos in the bottom wing, Hitec 5955's, connected the top ailerons to bottom wing with 4/40 all threads covered with CF tube. I used Du-Bro 6/32 screws into the aileron trailing edges, screwed them in, then Dremel cut off the screw heads, then used the Du-Bro 6/32 linkage on the screw ends. I did have to cut the under-side of top ailerons & insert hard balsa aileron stock, its hollow there, so you have to do this to have any wood for the screws to thread.

3.)I used the longer engine stand-offs & pushed the cowl out further so the carb is not inside the firewall. The only problem was a gap between the cowl and fuse bottom, I glued on some excess white fiber glass cowl to that cowl area.

4.) The rudder didnt travel as much as I like, it was binding at the top of the hinge line, I cut out about another 1/4" of bevel on the hinge line. Also, the Dubro Pull-Pull horns on the rudder were hitting the elevator at extreme throws(even after cutting off excess screw)I trimmed off a little of the elevator( the edges that are angled to allow rudder movement).

I e-mailed Probuild (UK). They do sell Double Visions to U.S. but warned shipping costs were prohibitive. I have not yet found out if they will supply U.S. with spare parts. Got the "kinks" worked out with the cabane wing section, its much stronger and Locktite should hold the screws in. Cant wait to fly it again!!!

Got 16 flights on the DV, everything is holding up well now,no cabane or cowl screws coming loose, the covering is not an issue,apparently it was fixed. I flew it in 15-25 winds , no problem at all, a little bit more input required but well within the planes ability(& mine too). Good god does this thing do rolling harriers wild & fast, very tight circles too when you bang 'em out. It's gonna be a challenge to stop the TR's, it wants to every time, but once I was able to do one anti-torque roll with right aileron, so I think its do-able.
This plane is F__U__N! (its over 18lbs BTW, DA50- no problem)

They never answered the 2d e-mail, but they do carry the ARF and its a Chip Hyde DV for sure. I got the minor bugs out, nothing really, just screws vibrating out. After 15 flights & one gallon, I went to 64/1, seems it will need a bit more leaning now, must be the extra oil required a different setting. The DA50 is powerful, 18.5 lbs is no problem, have pull-out power!

Next time its 40 deg. day/30deg. night, I'm up for it!!!! I added a pressure tap to the carb & routed the tube inside the fuse, also went to 64/1 mix, now it seems to stay rich on the low end after a lot of leaning, if it doesnt lean I'll have to back up to see whats up. The TOC Yak/DA50 should be here today,the wife took it well!!!

My DA50 was running pretty good at first, a little too lean perhaps, but after the changes, its not leaning out, I went in at least 1/4 turn , maybe more. I know its back to the original setting but still rich. I'm not worried, yet. Can always undo the changes. I gave up my trailer this year for the TOC Yak,figure I can still get to the field without the trailer, must have YAK, baby!!!! Baby got Yak!!!!!
