I went to a 13T/315MM and the motor still seems hot after running a battery thru the heli .. just wondering if a 11t or 12t will kool it down any more.. i also noticed that there is alot of the Motor plate that could be Dremel down a little to get some air flowing thru the motor .. anyone try it yet ??

Sammy-- I've been thinking of doing that myself. The Ammo is about 140 F after a flight-- hotter than I want to put my finger on but probably not too bad. I have an Align heat sink on it, but no thermal grease, so I figured to put the compound on it first. What's your temp look like?

I wouldn't be too quick to open up the tray, just assuming that HM flew it a few times . I haven't tried it yet. I was messing around with the governor yesterday and brought the hs down to 2450-- didn't like it at all with the MAH blades. I suspect the thinner blades weren't lifting as well, but for whatever reason it felt mushy at that speed. Maybe just by comparison, but still!

I bumped it back up to 2700. I have some shorter gears, but I haven't gotten there yet-- maybe next weekend, but I'll only keep it that way if I can keep the hs something decent. I ought to try the lower gear with the HM blades, now that I think of it; I got a bum set of HM carbons a while back, and I just got the replacement set from them, but I haven't tried them (quality of parts is up and down with HM, but their customer service is great).

Hmmmm.....

(btw, if it burned your finger it has to be 160+ F. Is there maybe something else going on?)

Na dont think anything is wrong .. the ESC is Cool .. i have went out and got a trex canopy and drilled 1/2" holes all over the body to fly indoors and still gets hot .. i have not set the governor ( Align 35A ) yet want to get this issue resolved first .. the heli flys great but just gets hot ...

Hmph. Only other thing I can think of is if the pitch/throttle curves were off. Just floating around indoors it shouldn't be that hot. Either way, I'd certainly try stepping down a tooth or two on your pinion and check the pitch and hs (the latter to make sure the motor is getting up to operating speed).

Luck, man.

Actually, thinking about it further, I think I'd be more inclined to start with a tach (you know you want one, and a GloBee is cheap!). You can tell a lot just by knowing what the mains are turning.

Interestiong, my 430L never goes above 110F w/out heatsink.

i have rechecked the pitch and throttle settings and they where off a little
i have a Ammo 28-45-2700 .. my setting are
NP -3@0-28-50-75-100
NT 0-40-78-92-100
I redid the Swash plate with a lazer level and then set the pitch thru-out the Throttle range .. heli flys better but still have a temp issue .. not as hot as it was before but still warm .. was running with the canopy on ..
Could this be the way the motor is ?? i need to find some way to chk the temp

I don't run your exact setup, but here are some thoughts:

Pull the motor and run a battery through it at one-quarter to half power and see if it still heats. Other than some very minor bearing heat there should be no temp rise. This is just to check the bearings and to see if you have a winding problem.

Check the advance timing in the speed control. Too much advance will cause overheating.

While the motor is pulled rotate and check the head and rotor at all both pitch limits and neutral for binding.

If no problems in any of these areas, check the backlash on the pinion using the typing paper technique. Too tight and the motor has to compress the main gear as it rotates.

Hope this helps.

Ammos are known to over heat

thats what i`m thinkin also, its the motor .. just put a heatsink on it w/Thermal Compound and ran a battery thru it with really nothing changing in the temp .. i`m going to pull the motor and run it up as " Patented " said to do .. to test the temp issue .. i know the paper trick and just did it when i droped the new Main pinon gear on it so i know its not to tight

just checking around and following the idea that the timming could be wrong with this motor .. align 35A ESC and the timming is set at 2-2 for 6 pole or more motors .. i cant find anywhere even on http://www.electrifly.com/motors/gpmg5105.html
how many poles this thing has ????
