I am planning on joining the MX450 club soon. A guy at my work is going to trade me one for one of my cars. It's going to be my first heli (I learn quickly, so I'm not concerned with the advanced nature of this heli. Plus I have quite a bit of simulator time and I'm pretty good at it.) so I need some help with setups.

The heli comes with HS-65MG servos throughout and a futaba digital for the tail (not sure of the part number). I need a gyro, motor, ESC, and a battery to complete the setup as I already have a spektrum DX6i radio/Rx. I'm pretty much set on the Futaba 401 gyro, so thats easy. However, I need some help with motors and such. I've been reading about both the Hacker A20-6XL and the Aligh 430XL being used with good results. Also, a guy at my shop said he was running an A20-20L in his, but I doubt this as it's really low kV (1022) and its just a tiny motor overall. Is there any advantage to either motor? Any reason for me to go with one or the other? Also, what ESC is sufficient for those motors? I have a Hacker X30 in a plane of mine I'm willing to use...would it work for either setup? Obviously I'm not going to be doing any hard 3D stuff anytime soon with this thing so I don't need an "overkill" setup.

Also, I need some battery suggestions. I have a multiplex 3S 1600 20C battery for my plane that I could use and I read someone got good results with a 1500 pack...would this work or do I really need the recommended 2100 pack?

Any additional setup notes I should be aware of? It's never been used before so it's basically brand new.

Thanks!

-Dan

The 430XL has been inconsistent in the MX- I wouldn't use it. I don't know the Hacker you mentioned; I've used the JGF 450TH and 500TH motors in mine with excellent results. ESC on all of my helis is Castle Phoenix (35 on the MX), excellent stuff. On 3S, I've used 1500 and 2100 20C both, and either was fine, but with different flight times.

If it has the original main rotor blades, you'll probably want to toss them and get some decent ones. For just starting out, the Align wooden blades would be a good choice- generally consistent and not very expensive.

For the rest, I'd only suggest you take care to get it adjusted correctly and be careful that everything moves smoothly. The MX is generally an easy heli to fly, as easy as any 450 will be, at least.

Thanks for the info! I was looking at those two motors on HeliDirect and they're both about the same price. It looks like the 450TH with an 11T pinion is a good way to go. Any preference between the two? I don't need insane power by any means so whats the bet setup for just having fun/limited 3D?

It does come with the stock blades so I'll get some align ones from work. Sounds good to me.

Thanks again! I'm sure I'll be back with more questions in the future...

Either one is entirely sufficient for the MX; the 500 for more power, while the 450 will give nice long flights at 2400 RPM. 11T pinion should be just right for starting out.

Ok...then the 450 is for me. Long flights is better for starting out than power. Thanks for your help!

Another servo would be the Futaba 3154 thats made for the Gyros, super fast and digital smaller than the 65's. About $32. A tail servo needs to be super fast to keep up with the 401 and the ablility to run at the high frame rate. I use the 9257 because I use 5v, If you have a 6V esc then you need a 9650. The 3254 and 9257 will not run long on 6V. Sorry but the 65's would be a great choice for cyclic but way to slow for the tail and gyro to get any full benefit from the 401. Tail servo and gyro are not ones to skrimp on. My son's MX450 has a 3154 on it and it's good enough to hold in fast reverse flights, tail slides. Talking about gyro's, the next best thing out there is the new Spartan gyro and is the rage. It holds better than the Futaba 611.

Jim

Jim, the 3154 will in fact run on 6V, you just don't get much benefit from doing so. I've flown the MX extensively with the 3154, and it's fine for flying around right side up, but it isn't strong enough for continuous hard maneuvering. Similarly, I said the 65MG would be OK; not exceptional, but OK for someone who's flying circuits and hovering. If it's what you have in your box, it's fine to start with.

Sorry the 3154 gets very hot and will burn out quickly on 6 volts and this is extensivly documented. Happen to me twice. The 3154 on 5V will allow me to to tail slides and fast reverse flight without blow out with a 401 gyro "properly set up". Thats my test for a gyro/servo combo. For $32 buck it is a fine tail servo.

I disagree. I have 5 430's and no failure, no one! All run very strong and are very light and strong for 3550kv and 3700 KV. I would agree that the JGF500 is eye blistering and the JGF450 is a fine motor. To say that the Align offering is probematic is misleading. Yes there are GOOBERS out there who may have had a failure mainly due to their failure in using the products. The magic word here is GOOBERS. Sorry, not trying to offend but no one in my club has had a failure that I know either. We are all running well over 3000rpm head speeds so we run them very hard.

You're missing the point on both posts, Jim. The 3154 will burn out if you don't set the heli up properly no matter what the voltage. I've done it both ways and I know what the issues are.

I appreciate your categorizing me as a goober. My 430XL burned out at 12A on 11V (truly pathetic), and its failings for others are "documented" as well. The 430L has a good record on the other hand, but you didn't bother to note which one you were talking about.

I had 2 430XL shaft failures and I stand behind the term inconsistent. Even though they have excellent power and run times. Sorry to bash Align but it is my feelings. My 500TH has been running problem free for months now

I'm getting the heli today so I'll probably order the stuff tonight...guess I'm definitely going to stick with the JGF motors by the sound of it.

I would. The other motors I like are the Scorpions- in a similar wind with similar setups they give you a bit more power, but they use a bit more juice to make up for it . The JGFs in my helis have been just plain bulletproof.

2 XL's and 3 L's . No problem. No I did not call you a goober. I meant others in the forums sorry you thought I was talking about you. Nor did I miss the point. If you are having good luck with the JGF motors then enjoy. I have had good luck with the Align offerings so I will enjoy and agree to disagree. There are other motors also that are great offerings such as Medusa, Hacker and a few others. Yes, you guessed it, people have reported problems with them also.

Well, my instant gratification complex got the best of me today...I went to the shop to trade the guy for the heli and I went around and gathered up the parts I was getting (A Phoenix 35, GY411 gyro, Trex 450 blades, and some deans) and the original owner of the heli started talking to me about his setup. He suggested using the Hacker A20-6XL motor for the heli as he said it had a ton of usable power and had good build quality. This was confirmed by another person at the shop so I decided to buy it instead of ordering the JGF one online. I now have everything I need except a screw that holds in the tail boom (the long 2x15mm one) as neither our shop or the next closest one had one. I'm probably going to end up ordering a complete hex screw kit for it so no big deal.

Meanwhile I'll be practicing with my simulator (G3.5) as I just got my spektrum radio linked up to it. Having the option to do that is so cool...flying with your own radio is so much better than flying with the stock one!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Congratulations, Dan . I think we'll all agree a set of good screws would be a fine idea . I replaced them all with hex cap scerws the last time I overhauled mine, and it was definitely a good choice.

Dooleyje- it's all good. I've had Medusa and Hacker as well, and I agree in general they're good motors. I haven't had either on the MX, so I couldn't say one way or the other, though I have heard good things about the A20-6XL. I couldn't recommend, one way or the other, something I haven't used myself, but it's hard to argue with Jason K .
