I finally got around to getting the first few flights on my QQ YAK 54 today. It was very windy but it was around 83 degees and a great day. The take off was very powerful and straight and only needed two clicks of right aileron and it was flighing straight as an arrow. Knife edge was straight and true and no coupling. I rolled it over inverted and it only needed a little down on the stick to maintain level flight so I must have hit it right, that's the way I like the CG to be. I had a little trouble with the Brillelli 40cc as far as tunning. After every landing the idle was pretty high from what it was when I took off. Couldn't seem to get it figured out at the field so I'll have to tweak on the carb at home. All in all it was a great day and a lot of flyers at the field today.

Zippi,

I am very gald to here your maiden flight went well. The Brillelli 40GT well get better as you get more run time on it. My 40GT is running like a swiss watch. The idel does seem to change as the engine warms up, but Scott told me that was normal. Mine is higher when it is cold and idles lower after it warms up. My engine has about 4 gallons of fuel thru it now and is running much better than when it was new. Keep flying it the engine just gets better after each flight.

Jim,

I plan on getting a lot of air time on this plane this summer along with my WH Extra 300LX. What is your 40cc in now a days Jim?

I had a little mishap today with the QQ YAK 54. It was pretty windy and I was lined up with the runway coming in and I'm not sure just what happened but it ended up in the tall grass next to the runway. I did a range check before I flew and everything was ok and I range checked it again when I got it back to the pits and it was fine. When I got home I checked everything out and couldn't find anything wrong so I'm writing this one up as "operator error". Anyway, all it did was hit the tall grass and spin around and the damage was very minimal. When I was at home I pulled the cowl off just to check everything out and I noticed the front of the engine box had started to seperate and come apart from the side. This could not have happened at the field because the landing in the weeds was not bad at all. I put some hardwood bracing in and re-epoxied a lot of the areas again. When I built this plane I even pinned the front of the engine box to side walls. The Brillelli 40cc must be causing all the damage and it's only had about 15 flights so far. There is nothing wrong with the engine it's just that the air frame was not built for a gasser of this size. I'll have to keep an eye on it from hear on I guess.
