I did a long-- slow break-in on my MDS 148 engines. I always run AT LEAST a gallon through them before trying to fly.

I run Omega 5% fuel in my MDS engines. It's got plenty of castor and the low nitro is fine.

These engines have pretty high compression. You really should run low nitro with a cool plug or medium heat plug. Anything with a hot plug and high nitro-- coupled with synthetic fuel will only lead to problems with these engines.

Take your time with the break-in. Don't get the ringed engines hot untill you have run at least 5 or 6 tanks through them at very rich settings.

With my 148 engines; I ran 3 tanks through them (16oz tank) at slobberring 4-stroke settings. The engines just puke smoke and oil at about 5500 RPM. I'll bet that more of the fuel is just being blown out the exhaust pipe than is actually being burned at these settings.

After 3 tanks; I leaned out just a little, but still 4-stroking a lot and puking smoke and oil. I didn't lean into a 2-stroke untill almost 3/4 of the first gallon. And that was still a VERY RICH 2-stroke.

You don't want to get it really 2-strokeing wide open and ripping like mad untill you've got about a gallon and a half or even two gallons through the 148. I know it sounds like a lot of fuel to burn on break-in; but its worth it. 5% Omega is cheap.

I love my 148 engine. The new C2 carb is a huge improvement. The engines idle very well and transition and midrange is flawless.

I just hate feeding them glow fuel. They do suck down a gallon in a day of flying at the field. I'm selling all my big glow engines. I want to go to gas. It's so much cheaper to run. Check my add in the "Glow Engines for Sale" forum. I've got ST engines and MDS 148 engines for sale.

...which is by NO means the definitive outlook...

MDS, MVVS engines are good from the get-go, run great...but don't last. ...At least that's what I've seen...there could be other results, too...but I haven't seen them.

I made the grave error of trying an MDS .48. It was by far the worst engine I have ever owned for many reasons. From what I hear everywhere, you never know if you are going to get a good one or not. I guess if you like gambling, you'll like MDS. As for me, No Way. There are other engines I will spend my hard earned money on instead that have a much better reputation.

The 38 is a bargain, & pumps out some serious RPM, quite light too - its that big heavy exhaust ( Quiet )....

The quality control is poor so you take a chance....

The latest engines are much better, general improvements & attention to detail, extra seals = better carburation.

If you 'know' your engines then the risk element is zero as you should be able to 'fix' it

Seen MDS 38 & silencer for about £33 - worth a chance !?

They are cheap because they are turned out in large numbers...

..only they lack detailed inspection & rejection.

Hence you might get a good, bad, or incomplete engine. Nut the actual design is a very competitive unit.
