All you need to do is replace the servo gears. They are like five dollars a pop. The energy of a crash has to go some where. If you do not strip your servo gears something else may go.

You have a good point there, crashes are all bad and something has to give. In my last crash I sqaushed my lipo, which broke out my motor mount, which trashed my gears and most plastic head components, my rotor blades and cabin, but my tail boom was ok!
Rule #1- DO NOT CRASH

is the XL really that weak in crashes? I have not build mine yet.. but I find the plastic frame to be a little flimsy and will withstand crashes.. but I think I am thinking wrongly....

I have had 3 crashes with mine and the frame is one of the things that did not break.
I did strip 2 servos and it cost $4 per servo to replace the gears.

The TRex handles normal low level crashes very well, I came down from 150' at a 45 deg angle rolling, estimated speed at impact 60+ mph, nose first, it doesn't get much worse than this and it went off like a freaking hand grenade, some parts 40 feet away. I lost orientation when trying to pull out.
Slow crash = GOOD
fast crash= All BAD

ok guys here is an update:
its all built and ready to go, or so i thought...
i gave up completely on setting up the gyro for now so the rudder servo is going right into the reciever.
-it shakes like a dog trying to crap razor blades, which looks like it is the rotor tracking
-it seems to be acting like im using a mode 1 transmitter...
im holding it in my hand by the skids as i throttle it up, then testing each direction on the radio:
the more throttle i give, it wants to pitch back, if i push up on the right stick, it wants to go straight up, pull back and it wants to go straight down, right and left on the right stick seem right, it wants to roll over in the correct direction. the tail is doing exactly what its supposed to.
im afraid to adjust the tracking without the servos set up right, any input would be greatly appreciated.
i am totally new at this so i hope i described what is happening correctly, this is quite frustrating as one servo doesnt do just one thing, the CDE mixing is really confusing me as to what is doing what.
also, im using a Spektrum DX6, the directions include set ups for the futaba, hitec, and jr... so maybe im doing something wrong there.
at this point ill take any input from anyone, im not gonna go fly inverted the moment its set up right, but i would like start hovering at least!

Hey zero,

is your radio set for 120dergree ccpm? what mode is it set too?

You probably already know ths but,

The swash should be level throughout the up and down movement of the throttle stick, with no tilting. you can test the swash with the throttle hold on and not have to worry about the blades spinning.

Is the swash tiltling backwards as you give it throttle?

I can get more indepth, just need alittle more info from you...what gyro? Are all levers on the heli parallel at half stick?

raserx-

im not sure how to tell if the radio is set up right. cpm mode is on, and it has a value of +60 for each channel affected. i know the swashplate should be level, but when i give it throttle it tilts all out of whack, i can tell you what direction its tilting this evening when i get home from work.
can you be more specific what levers need to be parallel at half stick?
i feel rather lame in this process, so be patient with my ignorance. the guys at my LHS are pretty young and not a big help, so im hoping with the knowledge you guys seem to be overflowing with i can get my heli going without having to go there.
thanks for the reply

Zero you can unplug the motor from the receiver while you are setting up servo's and the swashplate - no need to have blades spinning around your face while you do that. Note that raserx suggested your DX6 be set to 120 degree ccpm and yours is set at 60 degrees - need to look into that first.

wick246, i can use the throttle hold switch, that will have the same effect, correct?

raserx, yeah, im thinking that will happen too, but right now the mixing is really hard to get my mind around. ill post pics tonight of what the head and servos are doing with each input. i appreciate the help!

Nah - be safe, just unplug the motor lead from the rx then you won't have to worry about it no matter what you do. It's a 2 second thing that you can just plug back in when your done.

Besides, what would happen if you accidently bump your throttle hold switch off while you are at full throttle? Be safe and unplug the motor
