Is there any way of making a home made dyno for these little engines. Just starting out and would like to see the results of future modifications.
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks Troy

Do you specifically wish to measure the torque or just see how the performance changes with modifications?

If you wish to actually measure the torque, the easiest way is mount the engine on a tilting platform with a small hydraulic ram and pressure gauge at one end of the tilting arm (the end of the platform away from the hinge of the plate). then couple the engine to a small load (small alternators from motorcycles work well - you can alter the load on them via a variable resistor). measure the RPM and the pressure on the gauge - this pressure will equate to a torque value (Foot/lbs or Newton Metres). Horsepower can then be calculated.

If you just wish to see how performance changes, Mount the engine on a stand, run it with different propellors and measure the RPM with a good tacho. Use the same propellors each time so that the loading is standardised.

Either way for proper comparison, you will need to also measure air Temperature and humidity. then calculate back to standard conditions.

I seem to recall one where the engine was connected to a generator, the load of the generator would load the engine, and an arm from the generator would push down on a spring scale. Measuring the power from the generator was a nice double check on the RPMxTorque from the engine speed and scale reading.
