Hi Tmoth!

Do you already have any idea how to hinge your flaps to the wing? Maybe by placing small flat hinges side by side to simulate the hinge strip of the original? I think I'll do it that way with mine when the kit will arrive after the summer. Maybe I'll make it detachable by removing the short pins and replacing them by one long pin.

BTW What are your intentions with the cockpits? When I look at Kinzey's in detail & scale it seems to become pretty time consuming.

Nelson Hobbies has piano hinges in several sizes and lengths. Would work perfect for the Dauntless. Don

I hope to pick up some of the Nelson piano hinges for my SBD in Toledo next week. I'll be building the cockpit from scratch... that's the fun part!

Just finished cutting out and remounting the scale SBD5 cooling flaps on the cowl last night. Set them open to about degrees. Also finished laying up two fiberglass/epoxy "scale exhaust pipes" from scratch and test fitted them to the cowl. They look pretty cool!

Still no retracts from Robart!

Tmoth,

Checked with Robart again today. My Dauntless retracts that were supposed to ship 3 weeks ago (didn't), then supposed to ship last week (didn't) are now "supposed" to ship "within a week or so!" They said "that's the best we can do." What a way to run a business.

After 6 weeks they just tell you that it will ship by Friday every week, week after week. It's a good thing they've got a solid product, cuz their service/credibility stinks IMHO.

Here's the latest on the Dauntless. I finished hooking up the center flap with it's 2 servos and linkages. I'm using 1/4 scale "easy hinges" for the flaps (the ones that you glue in with thin CA. I put four on each side. All other control surfaces except the rudder have Robart large hinge points.

I then finished sheeting the bottom of the center section, sanded it and glassed both sides. The wheel wells are cut out and I left the two rectangular openings for access to the servos and wires. There will be two hatch covers for those.

I'm not doing full cockpit interiors. I'm going to put platforms a couple of inches down in and put details down to there. My hat's off to those who put complete cockpits in on this plane. There's so much in there it's overwhelming!

SNAKE STUKA,
I'm using an Olympus C-730 digital camera. The pictures have to be reduced in size from what comes off the camera in order to post. Resolution is 72dpi and the image size is about 8". I'm using Adobe Photoshop to resize pictures. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get it small enough to post.
Walt Moucha makes a 120" Dauntless?
The Skyraider sounds great. I hope you're hanging all kinds of ordinance under it. That would look really cool.

NEO,
I thought about piano hinges but I didn't really want all that metal on there, plus the E-Z hinges are so easy to install. The upper dive brakes will be fixed and not operational. I want to keep this plane as light as possible and it's already going to have 11 servos without the upper dive brakes.

Are the ez-hinges you are using made out of cloth?Dont worry so much about weight .Zirolis airplanes fly well even with a little extra weight.Dont compromise the strength of the hinges because these gas engines really shake.I found out with my Stuka when the canapy started to crack after 10 flights. Thanks for the info on the pictures.

Tmoth,

Finally got my Robarts after 8 weeks, and I'm trying to figure out how to connect the gear door to the landing gear struts of my Bates SBD Dauntless.

The attached photo of the full scale plane shows some sort of turnbuckle that moves the gear door along with the strut when opening & closing. There is no fitting/attachment on my Robarts to connect to. Any idea how I can recreate this mechanism in relative scale? What are you going to do on yours?

Thanks,

Neo

I'll probably do it the way I've done it on other planes, make a strap out of thin brass and wrap it around the strut and clamp it with a 2-56 bolt and nut, forming a tab sticking off the strut. The tab has to be long enough for another hole a little further out. Then epoxy a small hardwood block with another hole in it on the inside of the strut cover. Then I connect the two with a short piece of soft steel wire, like a scrap piece of 2-56 pushrod.

You could also attach a tab made out of sheet brass to the strut cover and connect the strut and strut cover with a 2-56 threaded rod and a couple of snap on ball links.

Gotcha, good idea! My struts came in gray, but the SBD had white struts. I suppose I can just scuff them up and paint them white? Definitely don't want to get any paint in the working mechansims of the retracts! That will be a nail-biting job, after dropping 8 weeks and nearly $500 on retracts.

I know. I spent more on my retracts than any other component of the plane. I think you'll be very happy with them. Just hook up your air lines carefully and everything should work fine. The paint on them is soft and seems like a primer of some sort. I just roughed them up a little with 400 paper and they're ready to paint.
