I'm looking for any help with a KMP P38J...It's power will come from RCV 91s...Futaba Spread Spectrum radio with anilog servos...I was on RC Warbirds.com and in the P38 photo gallery, some pilots used gyros in their Lighthnings...Anyone tried this?...Results?...Any other helpful hints?...This is my first attempt at a WWII aircraft...Typically I build and fly WWI planes...Thanks

I had one back about 2 yrs ago. Put one flight on it and got rid of the plane. To me it came out very heavy and was not very responsive to controls. Gyros might help if you have an engine quit, but best to make sure the thrust lines on each engine is set out to counter the effect of flameout. Another thought is to set engines up for counter rotating engines, but don't know if the RCV's will do that or not. Saito, OS and ENYA can be reversed. KMP's B25 was a whole different story, flys like a dream, roll out and take off is smooth and very scale, made several dirty passes,( gear and flaps down) rock solid. Landing was almost too easy, first one was a little hot but plane flared perfect touchdown was great.

The story on the KMP P38 can be long and involved. The bottom line is they fly lovely, as long as you are expecting a scale model not a fun fly! RCV91's will haul it around but the weight will go up. Mine flys on 2x OS46AX's, Futaba radio with std servos, std retracts and is just over 7kg weight.

Look for:
Tailplane incidence - version 1 & 2 kits were at 5 degrees, should be re-set to approx 2 degrees compared with the wing root next to the pod. Or be prepared for LOTS of down elevator trim.
Check the gluing of the spar tubes at the centre pod - mine came adrift and needed re gluing and supporting. This is under the cockpit.
Ver 1 & 2 retracts are not all that great - can't comment on the latest style. The extruded housing might as well be made out of cheese, it deforms and play develops at an alarming rate. I've made my own for the nose gear but not flown it yet....
Don't worry about special thrustlines for the engines (IMHO), the engines are that far apart if one stops it WILL be interesting. This is one time when less power is better!
I made a jig to hold the inner wing panels and the centre pod aligned during gluing, I just couldn't juggle it freehand.

Check the other posts here on this forum, lots of other input available,
Have fun.
James.
