Guys

Getting the shop back in order but so far I'm impressed with the little Zero I picked up at the WRAM show.

You can't beat the price, and it loots to be built pretty straight and true. May I suggest you switch to a better brand of covering however.

Other ARFS from China allow the covering to be scuffed and painted easily. I found some of your covering to be already painted, and the covering wanted to lift/peel when scuffed. Even if it raised the price $20 per unit I know I would still purchase this little gem for $100. I know others might not, as the Zero always seems to sell poorly here in the States.

Ill try to post more on the model as I continue.

A couple of photos of the altered motor mount, and mocking up the model in its well-weathered new paint job.

Regards

Tommy D

Nitro Models .25 Maiden report.

It’s long overdue for this one. Save setting the throws on my Radio the model has been done for some time. I was going out to the SEFLI field to maiden a hot little Mustang so I figured get the Zero done and take that along as well.

While setting up the radio I had a complete power loss/shut down of the plane twice! Checking the connections I found something odd. The Used ESC I had purchased apparently has a Deans Ultra knockoff on it. Even though it fit into the “real” deans on my parallel adapter it was not a good connection. Thank God I found that before I flew the model.

The winds were blowing real good for a maiden. I had just about lost the Mustang Reno racer and didn’t want to loose the Zero as well. BUT… a little taxi testing couldn’t hurt.. right?

The model taxis my rough grass field very nicely. The Nitro Models Spitfire for example needs a lot of up elevator to keep it from tipping over. Not true with the Zero.

I guess I got carried away with the throttle and was keeping the nose into the wind with the rudder. That’s when a gust lifted the nose and right wing! Thoughts of ground looping <can you damage a plane in any other way that’s less graceful? > came to mind. I made a decision and I firewalled the throttle and used the very capable rudder to cancel some P and we were flying.

Aside from some down trim the model required no other trim. On low rates she’s a ****cat. On high rates, with help from the rudder this might be a model even I could slow roll! That says a lot!

John hit the stall characteristics on the head. No wing drop, it just gets mushy. Now with a 15MPH wind blowing I did not get too cute. No inverted flight, no outside loops.

The power system is more then adequate and she moves out quite nicely. I have not cut a cooling exit hole in the fuse yet, so again noting cute. Downwind blasts followed up by chopping the throttle upwind.

The first practice landing ended up being THE landing. Nailed spot on in a stiff breeze she looked awesome rolling out. What the heck, one more flight right?

Nice straight takeoff this time and away it climbed. Ill admit to having more fun on this short 2nd flight. I pushed the model pretty hard and I think it might be faster then my similarly equipped Spitfire. The two TP 2100 PLs were HOT on removal!

My paint Scheme is AWFUL in the air! You can’t tell up from down one bit! I mean it looks great in the air, you just better not blink or you will loose it to a white fluffy cloud!

With a sudden lull in the wind I lined it up for the 2nd landing. With no wind whipping under my wings I blew this one. Came very close to stalling and she came down hard on the mains. She’s smooth for sure but it is not a sport plane, this warbird lands like a warbird.

Like John has observed the landing gear has low memory retention so I too now have a Zero with “bow legs!”

I ponder if I bend a set of legs for her if I use the same diameter it will hold up better then the cheap Chinese stuff. Just hate bending steel and the thicker it is the trickier it gets.

All in all you were right John, she’s a nice plane. I can’t wait to get her out in some calm winds, with some ventilation and new legs!
