grant-RCU -> PAW .06 diesel is great! (4/1/2007 2:06 AM)

I got my paw .06 diesel a few weeks ago and it is just great! I built a foam wing out of Dow 3/4 house insulation . 9x30" with 1.5 inch 2mm coroplast alierons wing area 270 sq inches. The fuselage is 2mm coro also. I made a fairlylight weight alumin LG (1.7 ounces with the wheels) for it . Weigh is around 18 ounces, heavier than i would like but the litte 06 paw pulls it very well. It doesnt have any problem with ROG takeoffs and takes off quick! landing in a tight space is no problem since the plane doesnt have much mass and the engine will idle very low. it almost has enough power to hang on the prop maybe if it was 2 to 3 ounces lighter it would have unlimited vertical.

Bottom line is I love this diesel! Its way better than my AP 061 glow which really sucks in the power department. I am running a 8x5 MAS prop cut down to 6 3/4 inches. The engine seems to like this size. I orginally cut it to 7 and it had a little more pull but not quite enough speed.

I never mastered the hand flip start so i just use my 1/2a starter and it fires up every time. It usually takes 1/8 to 1/4 more compression to start. its a very reliable engine. I had one flame out due to running it too lean anfter than i tweaked the needle just a hair rich and its been very happy.

I am waiting ona head for my TT pro 46 now. Humm I might be hooked on diesels! I love the smell of kerosene burning!

Thanks for all the help and advise!

Yeah, that is a nice engine. I was surprised at the power it makes when test running one with a buddy. I'm tempted to buy one.

Ok this is the push I need to finish up my pollk hobbies tiger moth conversion the 06 paw is already in on its side bench run was a dream before it met the plane
I wasted too much time messing with the norvel 061 AP 061 conversion both a total failure thats when I bought the PAW martin

The paw 06 power vs the ap 061 power is like night and day difference. The only good small glow i had was the norvel 074. it ran well on a 6x4 and a 7x3 mas. The ap 061 on a 6x4 is weak and anything bigger. I would almost be scared to put a 6x4 mas on the paw. I tried it but the prop is too thin for the prop nut to tighen down on it. A tigermoth should fly really well with the 06 since it has a decent wing area. my plane's wing seems small but the wing loading and cubic wing loading is actually very good. These small planes handle wing just as good as a 40 size plane in my opinion. I fly them in any wind.

Grant I have an 074 norvel in a converted Hobby people decathalon blue 8x3 or 8x4 MASm RJ made the head, Davis was most likely to put one in production but they are no more
and like most little norvels it was a dog to break in martin

Grant,

See if you can find a COX 7x3.5 for your PAW .06, I bet wou will be very happy with the results.

This engine has been in a box in my workshop since summer of 07. I had a renewed interest in the little diesel when i found it about a month ago. I Did some fuel experimenting and found a home brew fuel that works well. So far all ground test have given great results. Now I just need to finish the plane and test fly it.

My fuel is 1 part pump diesel, 1 part 30 w motor oil, 1 part any brand starting fluid. I have only been mixing 6 ounce batches at a time in a mason jar. I have a modified lid with the red plastic straw fitted into it for pumping the starting fluid. I mixed the 4 ounces of fuel and oil together then i put on the lid tight with the straw and invert the jar so the starting fluid sprays into the liquid for max absorption into the mix. I keep spraying until the mix comes up to the 6 ounce line.

The fuel stays fresh for a while in the jar. Its a very oily and smokey fuel[:D] Smells like my tractor running but with a slight burnt oil smell.

I love my PAW 100 TBR (.06cc) diesel engine, and just finished the run in last fall (on home brewed fuel).

It's an early model, with the control line venturi, but that may be the only way they came when this one was built. They even changed the name of the newer models to PAW 06.

Just last weekend I found a nice PAW 55 BR, and look forward to running this one in as well. Need to mix another batch of Olde English fuel mix for the run-in, which will hopefully be started as soon as the weather clears up.

Bill
