This is one of my favorite planes to fly. With the Irvine .53 it really rocks. I love playing with the split flaps which make for some sweet landings. I have mine put away for the winter, but I will be getting it ready for next season where I'm sure it will see much use.

Todd

Thanks for the update!

Hey, how secure are the decals/stripes on the model? I think I would like to do a little detailing but it will require removing the decals.

Thanks again.

I think with a little heat they would come right off. They have been applied on top of the heat shrink covering. I too would have liked it in silver, since there are so many nice schemes to choose from. When I built my 86" Ki-61 I had a lot to choose from. Here's a photo of it showing one of the excellent schemes they used towards the end of the war.

HOT ROD TODD

I have an Irvine 53 that needs a home, and I like the looks of this plane; what Retract Mods did you make that you mentioned?

No real mods. Just don't use the clamshell doors and make sure the set screws are tight and pushing on the flat ground into the gear wires. I used a master airscrew 11X7 prop and get excellent performance. See previous posts for a few more details. Everything considered it was a quick build and flies very well.

I just test flew mine last Saturday with a YS 1.10 and its a sweetheart.
It weighs 7.25 lbs without fuel.

Yes I know that seems to be an insane engine size, but I assembled this plane to race in the silver class at our local club Warbird races.

I did recess the firewall by about 3/4" to allow the cowl to fit properly.
And I have shimmed the engine mount to remove some of the right thrust.
I also have a Hayes 13oz fuel tank installed almost entirely in the front section of the radio compartment, leaving the area between the firewall and the first former empty.
A 6v, 1100mah flat battery is just ahead of the servos. And the JR 2.4 9 channel receiver is under the servos at the rear of the radio compartment with its satellite next to the fuel tank.
I also removed the covering from the bottom of the horizontal stabilizer and added gussets to beef up the structure for racing.
I needed a bit of down trim even though the plane is a slightly nose heavy.

I ran it around the pylons on Sunday and verified that it will in fact be a good Silver Class racer.
I was able to pull 12 second laps around our 700 foot course with no spinner on the plane and using 20/20 fuel in the YS.
Unless something tragic happens, I can see this replacing my KMP Critical Mass Sea Fury as my primary racer.

Have fun

Wkchow, I have had no problems running two-strokes inverted. The only problem I have found is that you have to watch out for fuel laying in the head between flights. It helps if you pull the glow plug out prior to starting and get the excess fuel off of the glow plug. When the fuel lays in the head it does not allow the glow plug to heat up enough for a start. I have a Irvine .53 in mine, but I think the OS .55 would be a great match and should pull the Tony around at good speed with a 11X7 prop.

I've just about finished with mine. All that's left to do is break in the Saito 82 and balance.

Hi,

I'm looking for a suitable model for my OS FSa .56 and was wondering if it would be enough to haul this model for sport flying?

The engine routinely gives me 10,400rpm with an APC 12x7 prop.

One of hobby shops here in Aus have the Ki-61 in stock but i need to act quick.

I think it would fly great with an OS .56 four stroke. It flies pretty light and does not have much drag, so I think you will find the performance to be acceptable with that engine. The flaps allow it to come in for a landing slow and soft.
