Wow....

Yours is coming along nicely. I'm stalled a bit, my kids, grandkids were home this weekend. Nice to have them but it cost me some time on teh plane. I'm also awaiting the extras hinges I need and for the axles and wheels from TBM.

My progress so far...I've got the aileron servos mounted but not attached to the ailerons yet (hinges), I've got the elevators hinged, sealed and the servos mounted and the linkage done.

I've got the rudder mounted and tonight I'm installed the rudder servo.

Hopefully I'll get to the engine later tonight or tomorrow. I hope to fly mine on next Saturday. I'm using my broken in DA50 so it should take some of the stress off the maiden.

I'm gonna ask my good friend Steve to help me get it range checked etc. He's good at that and I enjoy the help when it comes down to maiden day.

Your's sure looks good.

Thanks
Barry

Cant wait until a flight report. You might be the first to do it. Let us know how it goes.

Plasticman...

What did you do to the wood on the engine mount/nose? Is that just paint? Looks like somethng more. Also, what is the tube by the exhaust output? Vent for your fuel tank?

Have you done your balance yet? Does your ignition battery need to be that far forward?

Looks like a great build.

Thanks
barry

Barry,

On the engine box I did two things: first I painted it with epoxy/alcohol for complete protection. Then, I spray painted Rust-Oleum, Multicolor Textured for the "composite" look. I saw a plane done that way at last years XFC and it looked so good I tried on it this one.

The hose next to the exhaust is the vent and has a vent filter on it and that may be a bit different from most. I started using vent filters since I fly at a field that is unpaved and the dirt and debris that can accumlate in the vent is significant. The filter elminates that.

I have not checked balance yet but I wanted to keep everything as far forward as possible just to make sure that I had many options to position the Rx batteries for final CG.

David.

Hey Barry...Have you looked at the fuel tank yet? I was not sure about it at first but after studying it a bit I think I like it. The thing that bothered me was the small diameter brass tubes going to the larger diameter tygon tubing. I already changed mine but I had to "burn" larger holes through the rubber tank stopper to fit 5/16 brass tubes through. It worked well.

I also changed the pull-pull rudder from steel cabling to kevlar. What are you going to do there?

David.

I'm going with a Dubro 16oz fuel tank. Saves a little over 1 oz and don't have the extra weight in fuel either. My other plane with a DA50 will run over 20minutes if I want on a 16oz fuel tank. I hadn't thought about needing larger copper tubing...I'm using the standard tubing on my AirWild and haven't noticed any problems so I thought I'd just use the same. But, that does spark my interest.

The Rudder cable...I'm going to use what came with it. Mine is plastic coated and looks fine.

I love the "composite" look you did there. Man...looks cool. I'm probably going to paint mine flat black.

I'm going to go with a filter on my vent tube also. I fly off of a grass field so that should help with mine to.

Thanks for the tips.

Barry

Question...

On the rudder servo horn supplied (3.5" carbon fiber) what type of horn are you mounting to the carbon fiber one? The manual states 1.5 aluminum or 2 1/4". It's very vaque on that. I think it was on page 25 of the manual.

Anyways, all of my servo arms are not "flat" on top and I'd have to space it or something. What are others doing there.

thanks
Barry

Barry,
On my 85'' QQ I used the big black wheel that came with the Hitec 5955 servo to mount the carbon fiber arm. I enlarged the hole in the carbon fiber arm and mounted it under the servo wheel with two screw's from the bottom. Then I dremelled the wheel to the shape of the carbon fiber arm and soaked the edges with ca for extra peice of mind. Works great!!!

Thanks, that's how I'm going to do mine. Maudib said he did his the same way too. I was just worried about the plastic disk vs. the aluminun double arm. The glue is an excellent idea. I'll do that too.

I'm mounting the rudder servo and pull/pull tonight along with the engine cut out and mount.

I'm making progress but it always seems slow to me. Others seem to do in 8 hours what takes me 30 to do. I've built about 30 ARFs now...you think I'd get the hang of it. But they all see to take me a minimum of 30 hours.

It's my check, double check and check it again attitude that I can't seem to set aside that causes me to take so much time. But I just can't help it.

Thanks

I also take the time to look it over thouroghly but this airplane is so complete its hard to take so long. You are not the only one Barry. The first Funtana I built, took about 25 hours of time. Second time around it took only 12. I hope you dont get a second chance at having to build another 86", but I am sure it will take half as long.

Barry,

Dont get in a hurry to finish. This will only lead to mistakes and there is no worse waste of time then repairing a careless mistake.

No progress tonight.....Ohio State making a go of it at the NCAA Championship. Go Bucks!

I may swap out the fuel tank like you did as I agree with the flight times. My neck gets stiff if I fly longer than 20 minutes anyways.

What prop are going with? I am thinking of starting with a Vess 22A and then may try a PT Carbon Fiber.

David.

Has anyone had any problems with the rudder control horns? The manual states that the holes should be lined up with the hinge line. Mine are not. They need to come back, but, I dont want to start fileing away if it is not necessary..
