If Tamyia was to lower the price of their basic 1/16th scale tank with out the electronics to the same price as HL's with everything I feel Tamyia sales would jump up as it would put them in the range for the average person. I know I would buy one and put my own electronics in it.
If you weren't handy with modeling(assembling the kit) and wanted something you could run right out of the box(after chargeing and putting batteries in the transmitter) then HL would the way to go. Both HL's and Tamyias have their pros and cons but still it comes down to what the individual wants or can afford. I have seen pics on here of some great tanks be they HL, Tamyia, or other. But argueing over which is better is like argueing whether a Ford is better than a Chev or Dodge.
I feel it's time we let this thread go as we will never get everyone to agree all the time.... Let's get back to building and running our tanks who ever manufactured them.... just my thoughts and my last post in this thread

Yeah, but Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge are closer to each other than Hen Long is to Tamiya.

One is an RTR and the other is a model R/C kit made with highly engineered metal parts.

Not a put down, just a fact.

YHR, spot on. I dont need to add anything, its all been said.

As for clarifying my overall view, I don't think Tamiya's should be HL-priced or even half-price, just a little less "up there". Like closer to the Sherman's (semi-affordable) price than $1k

I purchased my Sherman for less the $400. At this Price the Tamiya is fine. No issue with me. I feel I got fair value for my Dollar.

Back to the original question. Tamiya's probably seem expensive because of the distrubution method. When it is all said and done the Heng Long factory is probably putting more in their jeans then Tamiya. Tamiya has all that world wide distrubution, and net back to dealer to worry about. Heng Longs are pretty much straight from the factory. For Tamiya to get back $100 and pay at least 40% to all the middle men who distrubute their product, the retail has probably got to be at least $450.

I bet Dealers don't deal direct with Tamiya. They have to go through "Art Vanderlay's importing conglomerate, and of course Art has kids to feed.

So a Tamiya tank probably leaves the Tmaiya factory to a big Japanese exporter. The Japanese Exporter(cost +40%) then Deals with a North American importer,(cost +40%) who in turn deals with a wholesaler (cost + 40%) who in turn deals with the local hobby shop .(cost + (40-60%).

For that you get the priveledge of reading instructions printed in good english, and the abiility to return defective parts.

The old world way of doing business is being challenged by the internet. Manufacturers realize that with a good price to the public and good internet distrubution they can sell a lot of product without all those other guys.

Tamiya has more then 1/16 tanks to worry about. Their network distrubution is hugh and does a good job for them. THey are not going to risk bringing that all down over a few 1/16 scale tanks. They will live with the higher price and protect their distributers and wholesalers. They got a lot of 1/35 scale stuff to pedal and don't want to do that factory direct!!!!!!!

As can been seen from this thread the support from their customers is huge. As long as the people who buy Tamiya feel they are getting their money's worth, Then Tamiya's Marketing approach is sound.

That seems like a sound opinion to me.Tamiya is big and established and Tanks are probbly a small fraction of what they sell. They make them, they set their prices, and people buy them. Not much more to it than that I guess. BIGMIG

To add on what YHR has said, the last thing that brings tamiya prices up is exclusivity, they hype it in a way that its exclusive(only a few thousands made, whether true or not we will not know) and then market it that way. Thus ppl whom feel that its worth the money will still buy them, thus the cycle continues. There maybe a warehouse soemwhere in asia that holds thousands of tank kits we will never know, or there really is only a few thousand tanks made, this is fair game and unless you got actual proof that either is true, its all pure speculation now.

The only thing that keeps me in wonder is about the price difference in US and UK, whether HL or tamiya, the price seems to be a lot more if I find it on a UK website.

Did not read all 15 pages of the posts in this thread, but here is some reality. I have, at the moment. 14 Tamiya tanks, all but Leo, 4 HL P3's, and 7 Wasan T34/85's. Bottom line. HL is a very good, inexpensive toy tank, with Sherman sound. It takes extensive work to bring it up to model standards, but it is marketed as a toy, not a scale model. Wasan is a very good model, RTR out of the box, but with a very weak trans system. OK, for less than 100 bucks for each, you get what you pay for. Tamiya sets the standard for RC tank quality and combat, period. Say what you want, reality is reality.
I can not say how many times, on various forums, new tankers buy a HL or Wasan, then ask "how do I get it Tamiya Battle System compatible? I want to go to (choose one: Danville, Texas, CA) to battle, and can not with the electronics. Answer? Buy a Tamiya tank, take the electronics, and install in your tank. What you have is basically two different ideas in marketing and the end use of the product, Tamiya's and everyone else. That said, the hobby is evolving rapidly, with new products coming or in the pipeline to assist the HL and Wasan folks to fight Tamiya tanks at a reassonable price.
With the advent of the Danville Battlefield, arguably the most challenging course in the world, things began to change in the hobby. The soil used there ate transmissions and Tiger 2 tracks like a wolf eats rabbits. Enter the after market guys, with better, stronger transmission systems, now Impact with their all steel gear trans systems, which will often fit other manufacturers than Tamiya, and earlier etoarmour with their modified steel Type 1 Tamiya trans. Metal tracks, a little crude at first, now with Impact's quality and performance, far better than before. Detail parts, Schumo and a host of other makers, to change your early T1 to a mid or late, modify or detail your Sherman or Pershing or Tiger 2, and now the Panther and JP. As an aside, one post stated that "parts fell off my Tamiya, detail parts..." OK A real tank is essentially blind when buttoned up, and believe me, everything on it can and will be peeled off in combat in anything but a desert environment. Hence also the after market producers for better, stronger, more detailed parts.
Bottom line, Tamiya and all others have a different phylosophy on the market. Tamiya is selling like mad, price point or not. HL and Wasan sell far far more, but to generally a different market. Many of us were happy to see the P3, and now the P4, as some of us can modify them to Tamiya standards, and bingo, another tank to fight with. Ditto the T 34. How many thousands of them sold? At one time at Danville, I distinctly remember fighting swarms of T34's, all modified to Tamiya compatability. Enough tankers exist out there for both markets.
As for the original question as to why to Tamiyas tanks cost more, it's the same reason some cars cost more than others. More goodies, better perceived quality, more options, better technical and warranty support, the whole gammet of reasons. However, most Tamiya tanks, 1/16, are now made in Phillipines. Wonder what they would cost if still made in Japan?

Hi guys this sounds more like wwII than 2008 is it the best that won or the ones who mass produced that won! for the price of a tamiya leo its almost the price of some of the larger scale models the cost of a dmd for tamiya is the thing that stops me buying one if there is an accident it is a lot of money to put right £105 plus post is the cheapest ive seen a dmd for sale dont understand why these or so expencive a similar unit made in china you could buy for less than £30. I always work on MURPHYS LAW. if it can go wrong it will so for the time being i keep saving and scanning the evil bay hoping to find one would love to build a tamiya i also would like to build a 1/8 scale but the price of tracks will make this a dream so for me to continue with my hobby at a price i can afford it has to be heng long

regards pete

Nice historically review of rc tanks, but look at the business organization to better understand Tamiya costs.

Don't think you will ever know Tamiya's real costs. And if so, what then? They are in business to make money, and they are successful. Same as the auto industry. The actual cost of making a car is far far less than you end up paying, after it passes thru 3 levels of market before you buy it. Do you have to have that new car? No. Can you buy a cheaper one? Usually yes. Will you? Not if you can afford more. Same in tanks. Same in model railroading. Same in skateboarding. There will always be a stratified market, low, mid, and upper. Can I afford a Benz? Not a new one. Can I afford a new Ford? yup. Difference is, in the 1/16 tanks, there is the Benz, and all the others. By the time you upgrade your HL or Wasan to Tamiya Battle System compatability, you have the same price as a Tamiya tank. It is far cheaper to buy a Tamiya tank for all the electronics and such you need to upgrade a HL or Wasan than to buy it piece meal. I know, priced them all. Now when it is time for another T34, a Pershing is also purchased for all the goodies. But, as I said, new things are acoming down the line, and I think by end of summer, the HL and Wasan lads will be somewhat more happy than they are now.

The HL to Tamiya DMD conversation thread is found elsewhere.

Perhaps you aren't really interested in facts and answering the threads question.

But now, we all have seen something about Tamiya's corporate structure, the scope of the business and some lawful published "numbers". Those facts help complete a picture of a professional corporation with the "corporate cultures purpose" in the right place, thus producing some outstanding models and toys.

The "facts" also help to answer the "expense" part of this thread''s question for those who still don't get it or want to get it. And, it helps one to see why Tamiya's "hobby grade products" (plus OSHA compliant products at that) would cost way more than a "Chinese ma & pa business" products.

Happy Easter.

Ok guys... This is about the 'rip-off' claims - both for and against.

If its 'OK' or 'NOT OK' (depending on which side you take) for HL to 'rip off' Tamiya, why is it ok (or not) for these various others...

Do you see anyone screaming 'COPY/RIP-OFF' at Schumokits, AxelModellbau, AFV-Model, or any of the others for duplicating many Tamiya parts in metal? NOPE.

What about Bulldog (Tanks & Trolls) and his copies of all that Verlinden & SOL (Korea) stuff. Seen anyone screaming rip-off? NOPE.

If you are going to make 'Its a rip-off' statement about a product, or ~defend~ someone for the act, make sure you identify ( or defend) ALL the suspects, not just the ones that you like/don't like. Otherwise you are being JUST as much of a hypocrite as those who are DOING the deed themselves, m'kay?

I'm not defending or attacking anyone here, except this completely idiotic thread, and the people who argue one side or the other.

It's LIFE people, deal with it, or get a lawyer, DO something about it.
