Last Saturday I went to the field to run up and set an engine before installing it in my latest project. I mounted the engine, a Super Tigre .75 in the test mount, grabbed the flight box and was out the door. It was sunny, blue sky and mild temperature. It doesn't get much better than that.
At the field I go to the far end of the flight line where the run up stand is. It is set there so the sound will not interfere with the guys on the flight line .
I mount the test stand to the run up table. I proceed to fuel it, only it doesn't fuel. hmmmmm My hand crank pump is not filling the tank!
Ok, fallback to plan B. Get the backup fueler. This is a six oz. squeeze bulb I have for just this type of thing heh heh heh. .. only its NOT in the flight box!!!
I rig a pump from my prime bottle and some fuel tubing. OK I'm fueled up.
I start the engine and after the after run oil burns off, it steadies down to a constant roar. Where are my ear muffs?.... Home, good place for them, saves the wear and tear on them. :
OK, I'll check the rpm's. Grab my trusty Royal tach. Guess who left it in the on position last time? Me! Ah shi*. OK, I'll set it by ear and fine tune it next time.
I set the low end so that it idles for a minute+ and transitions to top end without a hitch. (ok, so I got lucky).
After the tank runs dry its time to clean up. My spritz bottle craps out, it doesn't spritz! $#@!!??&
I spend the balance of the afternoon schmoozing with my fellow club members. I had the opportunity to fly a Starfire 40. Nice plane,I think I'm going to get one.
Back at the shop my inspection of the fuel system revealed that the new bronze clunk filter in the gallon jug was not allowing fuel through it. It is now replaced and functional.
The back up fueler is IN the flight box.
My ear muffs are laying on top of the test stand, can't miss it.
The spritz bottle had a grain of ? in the pick up tube. Once cleared it spritzes like crazy now.

My point is that all of the above could have been avoided if I'd taken the time to check. I always(well almost always) do a shake down check of the flightbox before I go out for the first time of the season.
Its a good proceedure, one day I'll follow my own advice.

Happy landings Tony

I went through the same exact thing the other day with my pump, only no backup at all.Ended up using a air compressor to pressure the gallon jug and force the fuel into the tank, worked great by the way.

How many times have we all forgotten to bring the radio of all things or extra rubber bands - wing bolts.

It always seems to be you forget all the mundane stuff.

Look at it this way, you we're doing the test flight, and now you'll be extra prepared for when you do test fly it.
