Hi,
Initially, I was looking for a <50" electric 3D aircraft with the "scale" style that I like.
I was wondering which one would be the best choice among the few planes available.
Then I decided to summarize specs and to list some user's advices & comments.

Any advice or experience with one or more of them?
Are you aware of a Giles G-202 in the 40-50" form factor?

Extra

tIANci > I have flown the EF Extra many many times. I find that the EF Extra to be a very precise flying machine, it feels like a big plane. It will fly 3D and also IMAC.

  • Fliton - AJ Extra 330S
    URL: http://fliton.co.kr/new/product/ajextra.asp

    quote:

zoomfly2000 > Look at flitons andrew jesky extra. we had done side by side comparison with many of these and this one out performed them in 3D, stability and windier conditions. my flying time with the 2150 4s is about 7 minutes of aggressive 3d. i would imagine the 2500 would give about 9 minutes or so. excellent plane to btw.
r1derbike > Well...I like this one! As above, you will have to strengthen the landing gear on the AJ as well. I use stainless bolts instead of the 4 mm nylons, which will break quite easily. 4 cells; FlightPower 2500 mah Evolution. Probably the largest battery/weight you should use in it. 9.8 ounces per battery. With the 2500 4S Evo(s) 6 minutes, tops. I fly hard. Sometimes, I fly 5 minutes after lots of full-throttle stuff. Nice thing about the AJ; it flies like a 30-40 percent bird. I kid you not. It flies as good as my large scale extra 300. All bets are off in the wind, but keep the AJ close-in, and it presents, and flies like a much larger plane.

Katana

Yak

  • Quique - Yak 54

    quote:

mocgp > In regards to size/weight, the QQ Yak is considerably larger than the others. My flying buddy has the 3D Yak at 47" and my 49" QQ is a MUCH larger airplane. My RTF weight with an Eflite Power 25 and a TP3S3300 is 52 oz. I don't believe there is that much difference in the performance, though. The scales may tip a bit in favor of the larger airframe but I am not an accomplished 3D pilot so I can't really speak with any authority on that point. If you get the QQ Yak, be prepared to re-engineer the landing gear because it WILL break. I've done 2 rebuilds and I now have it fixed so that the gear breaks away and leaves everything else untouched. Other than that, it is a really great airplane. I like the size; it definitely has the look and feel of a larger (.40 - .50) airplane.

  • 3D Hobby - 3DH Yak 54
    URL: http://www.3dhobbyshop.com/detail.aspx?ID=1858

captainpitts-RCU > I got the yak with the torque 28818-920 and airboss 45 pro running a tp extreme 3cell 2070 pulling about 33 amps and 375 watts with 13x6.5. The complete combo they have is the way to go came in at 38 oz.

Edge

  • Extreme Flight - Edge 540T-E
    URL: http://www.extremeflightrc.com/html/edge540e.html

    quote:

T Erickson > I like the Extremeflight Edge a little better than their extra. Even with the higher wing loading, the Edge seems more stable to me. It may just be that it suits my flying style (or lack of) better. The thicker tail surfaces may be part of it, and I hear the newer Extras will have them also.
I flew my Edge alongside an AJ Extra in a good bit of wind the other day,and the AJ was more stable in those conditions. Bigger does fly better, all other factors equal...That said, the AJs owner was impressed with the Edge. I had a good case of airfoil tail envy, though. I went with the Edge because I had all the goodies it needed in stock, and I trust ExtremeFlight.

I've also seen a couple videos of the Edge 540-E from Extreme Flight too but I've never flown one.

I would have loved to find a Giles 202 in the same size (~ 45" ) but I don't think there is one yet.

Any advice?

I have seen the PA Katana MD fly but not tried it. I have flown the EF Extra many many times. I find that the EF Extra to be a very precise flying machine, it feels like a big plane. It will fly 3D and also IMAC. As for the PA, its a lovely plane that is a lot more stable but less agile than the little brother. I would say it depends on what you like, the looks etc. But the EF Extra is cheaper and you can get all the spares that you need from Atlanta Hobby.

My vote goes for PA after seeing DAN (I think) fly.

If I had to choose right now, it would be the Extra 300-E from EF; but I'd like to get as many feedbacks as possible about those planes. That might help someone else to choose
I updated the first post with other models...

I actually would prefer the zero gravity mini raven. It is the best in its class and is supposed to fly like 35% aerobat

That guy flys good

did you get the "combo" or just the kit?
what did you think about the kit when you assembled it?

if you are talking about the ef yak 54 yes i got the ultimate combo. the kit is very well built and is very easy to put together in one or two evenings. the wheels that i got with it broke easily but i beleive the newest kits have stronger wheels on them. no regrets from me!!

I like the Extremeflight Edge a little better than their extra. Havent flown the 3d Hobby stuff, but it looks good and a bit cheaper. The same Guts fit both groups, so get one flying, and then try the others as gravity takes it's toll. T.
