I just purchased the QQ 86" Yak. Although I am an experienced pilot, this is my first giant scale. I was hoping for input on what batteries and switches are the best way to go for this bird. Also I take it there are several ways to set up the ignition kill, any input?

Thanks

welcome to the world of giant scale gas. you are going to love it. i use Fromeco batteries and switches and on a plane that size i would use 1 5200 for receiver and a 2600 on ignition with fromeco regulators and badger switches on both. smart fly makes a nice fiber optic ignition kill switch that i have been using for a while and they have worked great. you need a kill switch on a gas plane so you have a way to shut it down in case of a throttle servo failure. there are other brands of batteries and switches that work great but i have had very good luck with fromeco and when needed great service like you get with QQ aircraft co.

good luck and keep us posted on your build

I just use regular batteries.

I use Hobbico NiMH 2000mA 6v on the radio and Expert NiMH 1500mA 6v on the ignition. This isn't as eleaborate as what some use but it is functional and will allow a minimum of 5- 13 minute flights for me. I could probably get more but I usually recharge about then.

I use and agree that a kill switch is required on a gas engine. I also use the SmartFly optical kill switch. It's a nice one.

I'm using the following servo set up.

Rudder HS5955TG
2- Elevators HS5955TG
2- Ailerons HS5985MG
Throttle Futaba 9001
Choke Futaba 248

I'm using a DA50 with cannister set up. NX 22x8 prop

As of right now...this is the best flying plane I've never flown.

Thanks
Barry

I am assuming I will need two switches, one for flight pack and one for ignition? ALso, is anyone running a redundant battery system?

Thanks

Yes, you will have to run two switches.

I don't run redundant equipment but many people do. From what I can read, I would guess nearly half. I've never had a problem but I'm constantly knocking on wood.

thanks

So is it acceptable to just use the choke servo for a kill switch besides the throttle?

if you just use the choke for a engine kill and loose the receiver you have no engine shut off.

Okay next question; I already have four Futaba 9252 digital servos laying around. These are 92oz/inch torque, will these be sufficient for ailerons and elevators?

Okay, is it the torque or the gears that makes them not efficient? These servos are commonly used my hardcore 3d heli pilots, so I was thinking they could take a pounding.

Both. The torque rating is too low and the geartrain is not designed for the load that will be applied by the airframe.
