I have the E-flightline package with Himax 2015 5300, but can't figure out how the motor wires are supposed to run. Should they just come right out the back of the stator cone and thread back up in the fuse. That looks real messy and I'd think it would interfere with airflow. It looks kind of like the there's a slot for the wires to go up the inside of the "fin" in the cone, but the motor wires are too short to make it up there, and even if they could, I'd need to bore out that "slot" b/c it's not wide enough to fit all three.

Also, after one brief test flight (which was real squirrely and barely under control) it looks like the insulation on the motor wires started to melt a bit. I'm using a 3s Lipo, so is that too much current and should I use a 2s?

thks, scott

3S is right for that HiMax, if the wires are melting, something else is going on (ESC size...should be a 25amp....ask e-flightline). Leave the fan tail cone and nose cone off, no effect whatsoever on performance, and otherwise, they will haunt you at some point. Run the wires straight up from the motor, bend them over onto the fan housing and connect them laying flat there w/ a rubber band around the fan housing to hold all down.

Check CG and correct surface throws, make 'em smooth and reduce any binding; try some expo. MiG's a great flyer.....check yer thumbs, next !

Great, thanks for the advice Ray. I've re-assembled everything without the tail cone and front spinner, and routed wires as you suggested. Also, I've drilled 8 holes in the motor housing to get some cooling airflow in there. With the 2s Lipo, the motor doesn't even get above room temp, but the 3s definitely creates some serious heat. Seems a bit cooler, though, now that I've drilled the holes, and the wires don't seem to get hot (when bench testing.)

I'm using the 25 amp Phoenix controller, so that should be fine. Seems like the motor wires themselves couldn't handle the current, but now they seem okay at full throttle. I guess we'll see.

I've lubed the control rod tubes with a light coating of sewing machine oil, and all control surfaces are very smooth. With the 3s battery in, it's slightly nose heavy when balancing at the two little marks on the underside of the wings. It was a bit breezy during the maiden flight (ROG), so I'll wait till the winds calm down a bit before trying again.

Thks for the advice!

scott

Sorry but you need to realise that there IS a difference with or without the tail cone and if the wires are exposed. Just extend the wires and slowly drill the FINS, I did that with mine and its very neat.

Hmmm. Conflicting info.... Well, thanks for both replies. Since I've already got it set up without the tail cone, I'll try it out that way. Then maybe I'll fiddle with cutting and splicing the motor wires to make them long enough to make it up and out the tail cone fin.

thks, scott

Scott - you can actually split the tail cone in two halves, route out a little of the cavity in the fin, put the wire through then put it back with some CA. Maybe on your Alfa Sabre.

Disagree re nose and tailcone. Yeah, seems it oughta make even a big difference, but nothing discernable in the air at all. Nothing. And at some point, that tailconce and the nose cone are gonna come off w/ these hotter setups...and when nose cone does, it can make a shambles of the intake; tailcone can de-center the motor just enough to wreck an impeller. And I know I can get that impeller balanced perfectly w/o a nose cone. Mine are absolutley vibration free w/ no tip wear after hundreds of flights.

Had three MiGs now, been there done that. IMO, leave 'em off.

Ray is very correct. There is no difference of performance with or without the cones. The nose cone will come off at some point during flight and just tear it up. I've had a few mig's and sabre's, so i speak from experience. I also fly much higher performance EDF's just to back my credibility with such aircraft. Not a know it all , but 20 some years of flying, leads to a lil bit of knowledge. Good luck with your mig.

Nose cone coming off in flight will be a sight to behold!!! We had a guy at our field who bought the recent Red Arrows package that comes in foam. He was happily flying it and then one afternoon he takes off the tail cone ... the plane had problems ROG. Maybe its because the stock set up has marginal power so every bit is needed there.

Ray - what do you mean about tailcone de-centering the motor? You mean it may touch the motor as it comes off?

Great, thanks for all the input everybody! I'm glad that performance won't be ruined doing it the "easy way" i.e., just routing the wires out the back and up.

I bought an extra stock Alpha fan and an XF Fan 5100 motor from Hobby Lobby b/c the Himax that came with the kit was defective and burned out the first time I tested it. E-flightline replaced the Himax, but I figured it would be prudent to have an extra laying around. So that one I'll set up with tailcone and spinner, then I can just swap out units and see if there's any detectable difference. Since it's not exactly the same motor, I'm sure that's not an entirely fair comparison, but part of the fun of this hobby is experimenting!

Tailcone came off, got hung up in the motor wires and flapped to death in the 'breeze'. Was enough vibration to wobble the motor just a little bit and so took off about a mm from the blade tips.

Apropo... e-flightline leaves their ESCs in the exhaust stream, says makes no difference. Seems like it would have to..... But I install my ESC forward, anyway, just in front of the fan former and w /a little NACCA scoop over it, and a good notch behind it in the former, to promote airflow/cooling.

And, see the 'Screamer Thread' above for what's happening w/ latest/greatest fan/motor mods.
