It's possible the tank will fail/leak at the seam, time will tell.
As carpy100 said re: silicone tubing - this is the harsh truth (so we all find out the hard way)

a fuel tank from an aeroplane/boat that runs on 2 stroke (petrol) is the best bet
My first fuel tank on the rail was from a leaf blower - this was the smallest tank in the "graveyard" of the local mower joint
Still way too big for a scale car (hence the hip flask idea)
chainsaw fuel tanks today are incorporated in the alloy casting so no luck there, either.

either way, use it till it breaks! Who knows, it just might last

good luck

Also forgot to mention, you are going to make it 4WD again, right?
Forget the centre diff if you are just using it on-road!

Have you EVER seen an on road car with one???
that's because under load/stress, the rear wheels will unload to the front - poor handling results

Have you seen an overpowered V one RRR for example - the rear foamies are shredded, and the fronts seem OK
Not good for tyre life, but the only way to keep it on the blacktop when cornering
If you are just going to go in straight lines, solid axle doesn't hurt the wallet

Thanks alot for your help Mudgy. I guess that some time soon I will be changing the tank, I might even use a hip flask like you did. How much do they cost?
As for the 4WD, I think I will just be making it solid shaft because it will be alot easier to fabricate. I don't really mind if the handling suffers a bit anyway because Its already good enough.

Thanks for your comment nycballer I would reccomend the swap from nitro to gas to anyone! - Just S00000 much more low down torque!

Cheapest hip flask I could find = $20.00 Add 2 x aircraft nipple fittings (Du-Bro) or maybe you have some tuned pipe pressure fittings - same thing.

It only hols 3 Fluid ounces - about 120ml - that's all you need for drags

Maybe something that holds a little more for you??
Surely hip flasks come in different sizes
try tobacconists/junk shops - the retailers wanted too much for ones that had anything engraved on them like "jack Daniels/Harley Davidson, etc.

the days of Highway robbery are still alive and well when it comes to those kind of products

Hi Sam123,

First thing - I love your work and good to see what a fellow Aussie can do! You have given me some inspiration for the the wipper snipper motor I have sitting on the bench.

Just a couple of questions on your build -

1. What is your overall drive ratio? I know you mentioned your pinion to spur is 6.25 to one Do you feel that the gearing is good?

2. In the pics I can't see how the drive is to the diff (from the sprocket chain). How did you do this?

3. Looking at the drive front-on, which way does your engine turn?

4. How did you attach the sprocket to the clutch bell?

Sorry for so many questions, I just love your design and am hoping to build one myself.

Cheers.

Hi gbasile77. Sorry about the late reply, its just that I havent been on here in a while.
I found that the overall ratio of 6.25:1 is far too much if you intend on using the 1/8 buggy wheels. I have since changed the ratio to 3.6:1 and it is much better. The engine spins anticlockwise looking at it from the clutch side, like most other whipipper snipper engines (but not all of them). The clutch on this engine is like a socket spanner, the sprocket has been pressed into a nut of the right size and held inside the socket by the bearing on the end of the sprocket shaft. Drive to the diff is done simply by the chain and sprockets, nothing more. I hope this answers your questions.

Now, I would just like to let everyone know that I have done some substansial modifications to this car. Firstly I have now made it 4WD once again (yay ) but It was not as easy as I first thought. I have changed the drive ratio to 3.6:1 and also re-made all the engine/bearing mounts. This was done by changing the drive sprocket from a 6 tooth to an 11 tooth and the driven sprocket to a 12 tooth. I have made a new muffler which looks, sounds and performs great.
I have also ported the engine. I raised the exhaust port by 1.7mm and widened it each side by 1.2mm, matched the transfers to the crank case shaved 1mm off the intake side of the piston skirt for more intake duration. The result is an engine that revs much higher and produces much better mid to top end power, but uses more fuel (only slightly more though) and has lost some bottom end punch.
As of now the only things left to do are to seal the exhaust can with a better gasket (the chassis is used as the bottom half of the exhaust can to cool it down quicker), make breaks for it and stiffen up the suspension with some monster truck springs and thicker oil.

To sum things up all I can say is that this car is very, very fast. I will post some update pictures soon and definately a video. I cant wait to show you how much faster this thing is now compared to before
