Man this is a great thread to run across! I just purchased an old MK kit for the Curaure after looking for one for at least ten years! I can't wait to receive it and get started on it. Probably will just duplicate the kit and keep the original. So who has the short kits and what retracts are best used in this airplane? Any and all information is appreciated.

Ed

Don't worry about duplicating the parts...I threw in one of my CD that has all that done for you...enjoy.

Yea, I know the nose gear coil is backwards. Did it on purpose to clear the retract housing. If your turn it around, it won't retract fully.

I fly off a paved surface, so it will not be an issue. Done it before.

If I had an MK kit I would build it. Why own it if you don't? Make patterns for everything first.

I have no idea what series the Spring Airs are. Bought on ebay cheap and they were brand new and fit. They seem to be a good match to Rhom Airs size wise.

I did the wing fillets (what a pain in the @$$) last weekend. Pretty close to glassing now. Plan to use polyester like the old days. It sands so easy compared to epoxy.

Hi All,

Here is a picture of my Curare which was made ready to cover by Steve Byrum. It has an OS-91 and weighs 6 lb 11oz ready to fly. The wing is the standard Curare wing and it has more than enough power. I use it for Senior Pattern competition to try and beat Bruce Underwood. Nice Plane!

The one with the long AMA number is Steve Byrums. This one is a bit closer to 7 lbs. Both fly quite well.

Ed H,
Are those fiberglassed or just monokote covered? They look great!

Both are Monocote, Is there any other way! <GRIN>. I like wooden airplanes and Monocote is so much easier than silkspan and talcom powder and/or fiverglass. It also makes it so easy to repair when you have a accident.

Well, it's been one year now to get to this point... primer. Ready for paint finally. Things always seem to get in the way and being OCD about my building doesn't help.

Here are some pics of the plane prior to final color application.

Plan to work on laying out the scheme on the plane this weekend. Will be too windy to fly likely this weekend.

Looking great Jeff! There's lots of inspiration at casniffer's image database.

Beautiful plane, Ed. That is amazingly light for a design that usually weighs over 7lbs. Where does Steve cut the weight? Of course, no retracts account for around a pound, I guess.

David

If you keep the foam and 'glass well away from the airframe the retract equipped ones come out about 6lb 12oz without really trying.

Hey, there Jeff, your plane looks just like the one I used to fly. Good to see you are using the air brake on the wing. It works. If you need help wirh a paint design, just let the old man know. Dad

White base coat on. I forgot how much I hate painting! Argh! What a PITA.

Here is my proposed paint scheme. White, Red, Blue and Silver.

Now all I need is some 1/8" fine line tape.

I ran my Jett Fire 90 yesterday; HOLYSHIZEL! 16,000 rpm blubbering rich on an 11-7 break in prop. I am thinking at this rate the 11-9 will turn 15,000 easy in the air. Should be fast to say the least.

Maybe do some color application this weekend.

That's Awesome Dude...

What paint are you using?? What primer did you use also?? You glassed both the fuse & wings?? If so was it with .5oz cloth & epoxy resin??

Sorry for all the questions...

Chuck
