I have seen the MECOA web site, and their list of past engines. It is quite extensive. In fact, it is too extensive!

I would like to start collecting a few engines from our hobbie's past. Do you have a few choice picks? A short list of engines to look for? Classics, so to speak, like a '66 Mustang fastback?

I would love to have a collection of classics in running order.

Thanks!

How deep are your pockets?
A lot depends on what you consider to be a classic but for my money (which I haven't got enough of to afford them...LOL) a rather good start would be a Dooling 61, Dooling 29, McCoy 60, McCoy 29.
As an alternative there are a range of miniature versions of a lot of the classic engines made in Sweden by a guy called Arne Hende. These seem to be absolute jewels...imagine a perfect copy of a Dooling 61 but as an 09...same with the McCoy 60. Or a .5cc version of an Oliver Tigre diesel
I've put a few piccies of them on a web page at http://www.holdfastmac.com.au/engines2.html because I'm so impressed by them. I'm not so impressed with the server that holds the web page though...sometimes it goes off line

Well, my pockets are not too deep... But if I find the right one...

Cool engines on your site.

Thanks!

I have a McCoy .35 and a .36 and I sure don't see why they would be worth much. I think I paid $4.95 for the .35 when I was about 14, 45 years ago.

Dave:
I'm sorry you paid so much LOL I paid 3.95 for mine that took 8 Lawns I had to cut. Kidding aside I still have quite a few of the red heads as well a Fox 59 Slant head and an O & R 60 even a few McCoy RC from later when Testor got hold of them. All still run.

Hmmm I wonder how much that Enya 30 Exposed Valve 4stroke is worth? BTW it runs also.

What about an OS FS-60 with exposed rocker arms and push rods? I don't know if it's concidered a collectable but it sure is cool to watch it run.

One really historic engine that is highly collectible, and not terribly expensive, around $200 for a nice one, since so many of them were made, is the Brown Junior .60. It was the first truly successful model engine, dating back to around 1935, and makes a great conversation piece. It looks like a stovepipe, but ran just wonderfully. In the blink of an eye, dozens of other makes hit the market, but the Brown really started it all.

I don't know if you would consider a K&B 6.5 pylon racing engine a collectable, but if you do, I have one for sale in engines. It's the only collectable engine in my collection. I see some that look old in flea markets in Lebanon and Hamburg, PA. These flea markets are coming up soon for any interested.

Every engine in existence is "collectible", or will be, given time. I wish I had bought about 50 McCoy .60s when they could be had at around $24.00 wholesale, and it wasn't all that long ago. They would have returned nearly 9% per annum compound interest on the original investment, and they are more fun to play with than stock certificates. Hindsight is always 20/20 - most other engines of the same vintage would be beaten by a savings account, as investments, so you have to be very choosy about what to buy, and have a top-quality crystal ball.

Thanks for all of the great info. Keep posting!

As for the Pylon Engine, I will start to buy engines in a few weeks. I am going to the WRAM show on Friday, and I want to have the extra cash there!

Maybe you should decide what kind of collection you'd like to have rather than just buying anything that looks old (although that can be a help in swapping later on).
Some guys collect only 29 speed engines for instance, others collect a particular brand or just early spark ignition engines. Let's say you decided to collect Fox engines, there's a wide range of them and most can still be picked up fairly easily but there's also a few that might be more difficult to find so would give some interest in tracking them down, making a deal to buy or swap for them. Next thing you know you've become an expert in Fox engines and you've published a book on the subject

One bit of advice on collector engines: Know what you are buying!!! Nowadays there are many places to look for collectable pieces, and quite a few un-scrupulous dealers! There is nothing worse than paying top dollar for that much sought after relic just to discover later that it is either loaded up with "new" parts or an outright reproduction of the original. I have been collecting model engines for the better part of 35 years, and nothing gets me fired up like watching an interested "newbie" get raked over the coals by some predator. If you like, you can e-mail me direct for advisement.

Don't buy any collectibles from America's Hobby Center! My "Royal .46" had no name, no box or paperwork. I won't bore you with the explanaion I got when I called them. Runs good though, whatever it is. :

I was planning on having about 10,000 beautiful replicas of Dooling .61s, 29s, McCoy .60s, and various other engines that collectors would practically kill for made in China, complete with authentic original boxes, then flogging them on eBay as originals. I wonder how many people would get taken before someone started getting suspicious?

I hear that the Chinese CS McCoy .29 Redhead replica is not terribly reliable, and wonder how many newbie collectors have been ripped off by unscrupulous sellers?

Well just to add to what I said earlier about the Arne Hende miniatures...he also makes exact replicas of both the Dooling 61 and McCoy 60 (from memory the Dooling at least was a sparkie). A LHS was asking $800 Aus each for them (near enough US$400). droooooooooooooool
