Mejzlik makes a 14.4 x 13 prop. How do you guys think that would work on the 26GT? What are the advantages of 2 and 3 blade props? Is one better than the other in the Sundowner's case?

I've flown my new H9 Sundowner several times now and love the plane "but" after the last flight, I noticed that the glue holding the top of the wooden portion of the motor box had come loose ! A liberal dose of epoxy has cured that from happening again but I've never had an ARF's wooden engine box come apart like that before. By other accounts on this forum, it appears that there may be an issue with whomever is assembling it.

I advise everyone to keep an eye on the glue joints holding the engine box together which means periodically taking the cowl off...a chore to be sure but something you need to do if not done already.

Anybody use a saito 180 in this aircraft yet?
If so what kind of performance are you getting?

OH HELL !! Now im afraid to even take my Sundowner out now. My Sundowner is still on my kitchen table waiting for me to finish it. After hearing about the motor box coming off im wondering if its a good idea to even fly it ??

Yea, I'm a bit concerned myself. As you can see in the pic below I pinned the firewall and motor box. Also, you can see that the wood used in the firewall was so soft that the blind nuts pulled through. I cut reinforcement pieces from 3/16" aircraft ply for the rear of the firewall and faced the front with 1/8" ply. They didn't pull through this time.

This stuff is getting old!

As in my earlier post.I was very dissapointed with the quality of my kit and sent it back for a full refund. A friend of mine had one with the Saito 180.It sat in the pitts and shook itself to pieces when the engine was started. The covering was stripped off and the whole model virtually fell apart in his hands. The poor gluing is not restricted to just the engine box This shoddy build quality is going to give Hanger 9 a real bad reputation.

Mine is fine...better than fine. I landed the thing fairly upside down and only the vertical stab broke. Easy enough fix and it is going strong. Sounds like there are definitely problems, but...like all ARFs...you need to look it over good. If in doubt, take preventive measures.

Okay... I am starting to get really nervous about sinking $1200 into this bird with everyone complaining about glue joints etc. I think I am going to contact Horizon Hobby for a refund or an exchange for another plane. I was so looking forward to flying the heck out of this plane. I bought the plane from LHS the first week it was out. Does anybody know the product manager at H9 for ARFs, specifically the Sundowner. I know Mike McConville had something to do with the design of the plane, but I don't think he picks where and who builds them. Is H9 privately owned company? I have already assembled the plane but not purchased the Moki gas engine or all the electronics for the plane. I really don't feel like having this plane fall apart in the air like the Great Planes Ugly Stik I had this summer. $400 is steep for this kind of plane and the quality issues everyone is providing on the various H9 Sundowner forums.

Any suggestions about who to contact or how I might get my money back?

Good grief...I understand how you feel but did you even look at the plane? Did you check it out? If you saw something not right, send it back. If you check it out well and everything looks as it should, ENJOY it. Add CA and/or epoxy to everything if it makes you feel comfortable.

The way I see it is that maybe the first batch of planes that went out a couple might have had weak glue joints.

My Sundowner was absolutely perfect. I went over it and everything was first class as far as construction and covering.

I was not happy with the wheel axles they bent too easy and also the tail wheel gear is great for asphalt but not for grass, it was bouncy. I also opened up the wheel pants to allow the for tire expansion.

My maiden flight include two dead sticks and they were not pretty. One was in a fifteen foot gulley, and the other was in some alfalfa were the plane cartwheeled from wing tip to wing tip and then flipped and landed on its back.

In both cases the plane came out with out a scratch, I mean not even a mark on the monokote nothing.

I would like to add that I make it standard practice with every ARF even though it looks perfect, I re-inforce the landing block area,
as well as go over the glue joints with thinned epoxy, and also pin and tristock the firewall. That is the bare minimum.

If you go over your plane and see it looks good, you have nothing to worrry about.

I want to get a hold of Hangar 9 or Mike McConville and not ask for my money back, but tell them what a great plane I have.

The quality on ours is good. About the only thing I would complain about is the fit of the canopy/hatch. We have not had any failed glue joints even after a few hard landings although ours is E powered so it is not subjected to the vibrations of an IC engine. Overall we are very happy with the plane.

H 9's product support seems to be really going down hill to. They recieved my plane on the 14th of Sept. and I have not heard a word from them. I called them today Fri. the 28th of Sept. and they had not even checked it in yet....... I hope that it is just the Chinese manuf. of the plane and not Horizon. I have always had pretty good service from them in the past and hope that this is just an isolated incident. Anyway if you have the nerve fly it. It flies great and is VERRRY fast .I had mine set up with a Magnum 180 AR and all we could say was WOW!!!

Happy flying.
