Status: offline 		So I ordered some 3/4" TE stock and it looks like the SS plans used different 3/4" TE stock for the ailerons? Comparing my TE stock to the aileron in the rib side profile pic on the plans shows the leading edge of my TE stock is about 1/16" thinner than the plans call for. Should I replace my stock or sand down the TE edge of my wing to match?

Status: offline 		If you have enough of the stock shown in the picture I would glue another piece of the TE stock to the one in your picture

I found that the 1" TE stock from midwest had the right height at the wing TE. I then ran a piece of it through my table saw to get the width and all was right in my world.

Status: offline 		I found some 1" TE stock in my balsa stash. I'll trim it to 3/4" and then taper the TE of it a bit to better match the aileron profile on the plans. Thanks for the suggestion.

Status: offline 		My SS is coming along great. Easy build with laser cut wood.
Not sure about performance so I installed the trusty Cox.049 with Fugi tank;
then made it convertible for electric. (400XT)
Glad I did all that before closing in the fuselage bottom.
Much easier that way.

Status: offline 		Got my dope shipment in from Virginia Hobby Sport. I've not covered a plane in silk/dope before so this is new to me. Getting the hang of it I think. I grilled RainDave(thanks man) and done many a search and now moving forward with it. Using 5mm Habotai silk and Brodak Butyrate clear and white primer.







I didn't realize how loopy I was until I stepped away... simply walked across my garage. Phew! I had the garage door cracked so air could circulate but apparently not enough. Felt like I should add a few lava lamps to my work area and maybe put on some Phish or Floyd. Making progress at any rate.

You can tell which piece I did first in the first pic. I just painted the edges with thinner a few minutes ago and removed that silk. I didn't lay it down tight enough initially. Brushing around the edges with thinner and letting it sit for a minute made for easy removal.

Status: offline 		Finally got my SureShark done.
I can never build exactly to plan. I added a couple of inches of wing span as I like lower wing loadings. Covered with Solarfilm.
Also added 1/64 ply doubler from F2 to nose to stiffen things up. That made it a little nose heavy.
I was happy to learn that it weighs 10.1 ounces ready to fly less fuel.

Are you laying your silk down wet or trying to watershrink after it's applied. How much shrinkage are you getting on the Habotai when it drys before applying dope to the open areas?

Laying it down wet and then tacking in place with dope. I think my problems came from the silk drying before I had it completely tacked in place. Drys drum tight when did it properly on the horizontal stab.

Super - some folks have commented that the Habotai didn't shrink as much as the aerosilk that SIG sold. What company did you get your silk from?

Just as an aside, when I covered with silk, I usually kept a spritzer handy and would mist the silk if it seemed to be getting too dry before I finished doping it down.

This Hiscott set up worked very reliably in my old Top Dawg. However at 24oz. the TD was a little heavy.
The SS is under 11 oz. so it should be fine.
Will fly it next month at Hernando FL.

Status: offline 		BUILD TIP!!!!!!!!!!!! I love mine, it was easy however the foward top section was a pain. I got one for my Dad him and I built one over the holiday's well the fusalge front cracked while forming it. I am sure others out their ran into the same problem. TO CORRECT THIS GLUE A BLOCK OF FOAM TO THE TOP OF THE FUESLAGE FROM THE FIRST TOP FORMER TO THE FIREWALL THAN SAND TO SHAPE!!!!!!

Status: offline 		Foam is a good idea if you can't get the wood to bend.
On mine it did not want to bend either; so I soaked the front balsa pieces in warm water for about 10 minutes, then it flexed OK.

Status: offline 		Spray ammonia on the wood (Windex will work, too). It becomes very pliable. Apply glue to the edges and wrap masking tape around the whole fuselage and let it dry. But, foam is also a good idea.

Status: offline 		My Sureshark looks so pretty I kept it on display for a year.
Finally I got to test fly my Sureshark this morning.
It needed 3 clicks of downtrim after hand launch, then flew very well.
I will increase the aileron throw as I like my planes a to handle a little more crisply.

This plane is a winner.
