Background: I just purchased an RCS 140 engine, and the literature says to use a 4.8 volt NiCD 800-1400ma pack for the ignition, and specifically says to not use an NiMH pack.

Here's a direct quote from the manual: "NiMH packs can also NOT be used. These packs will work but will have very low operation time before the ignition starts to malfunction. This malfunction is caused by the high internal resistance of the packs. The average current drawn from the battery is 600 mA at full RPM."

I believe them, and will use a Sanyo red or yellow 4.8v 1400ma pack for it.

I was not aware that there was a limitation in current draw on the NiMH packs due to "high internal resistance".

Can someone please provide some details on the limitations of the NiMH packs - I am using them for all my transmitter and receiver packs right now, including a few aircraft with 7 servos each. Am I going to overload the output of the receiver packs while getting squirrelly in the air?

I've been using Ni-MH on some gassers, 100~150cc with good results. Let me know_bob

I have not had a rcs motor but i can tell you i have used and still use the metal packs on all my gassers FPE 4.2 2.4 5.8 and taurus motors Brison motor the 6.4 twin with no problems. I use the 1650 mah packs. For what it is worth.

Thanks for the input! I too currently use 1650 NIMH packs on my FPE, Fox and Brison gas engines. However, I have ordered two new 1400ma Sanyo NiCD packs from SuperBatteryPacks for use with my two RCS 140 engines.

Those should be great might as well go by what the manufacture suggests or states in the manual.

I would suspect they (RCS) are just being cautious, since NiMH are more succeptable to vibration damage, and NiCd can provide a higher current (hotter spark?), due to a lower internal resistance.

Sanyo NiCD KR-1100AAU = 19mOhm
Sanyo NiMH HR-3UG = 25mOhm

Hi guys, I am just curious. I don't use a gasser but I would like to find out if there is any LED to indicate low battery level ? Does this come with the ignition system for all gassers or you have to but such a "low battery" indicator separately ? Thanks.........

Gem 2000 is a very neat Brite LED readout it detects not only low batt levels but 7 other functions. I have them on all my gassers and glow planes. web site is http://www.electrotekrc.com/ Many hobby shops also carry the products the price is the same no matter if you buy it direct or from hobby shops i would suggest getting thru Bob the owner he can custom make the exact color of led lites and explain what the gem 2000 does. Tell him Bruce Swartfager from ALtoona Iowa suggested his products I am not particularly plugging the gem 2000 i just know it works and has saved a lot of trouble on my big gassers.
