Hi Mark,
Yeahs thats a bit violent!

I just think the strut is caught or jammed on something so the cylinder can't overcome the drag till the other strut is down and hence the pressure build up in the one cylinder is greater. I think I can hear the other strut coming down immediately. You can confirm this by pinching the pipe to the other main retract unit. I expect the unit to come down straight away with no delay.

The most common reason I see why retracts don't come down is that the strut or wheel are rubbing on the wing when they are in the retracted position. I guess you have looked closely and everything is in order here?

Also if the retract unit is being deformed when it is mounted, can you loosen the mount screws temoparily?

Also(again) I know its probably a pain in the arse but how about swapping the retract units to confirm it isnt one particular one?

Also(again again) how about taking the wheel and strut off to see if the retract unit works smoothly?

Geoff.

Hi Mark,

I have encountered the problem that David mentioned on several retract systems over the years. The more precisely fitting the retract components, the more likely the problem. I have fixed the problem by waxing up the retract frames and mixing up a slurry of resin and talc (not microballoons, too soft), apply it carefully and minimally to the retract mounting rail and then insert the retract. Tighten the mounting bolts with minimal torque, ie two fingers lightly on the driver. Let the resin cure and you have a perfectly passive retract mount. My bet is that will solve your problems. As David has suggested, your symptoms suggest a high friction load in the retract mechanism while it is in the wing.

I would interested to hear how you go either way.

Kind regards,

Craig.

Well, I was planning on testing it this Bank Holiday weekend but the 30mph winds and 2" of rain put pay to that.

It is sat charged, fuelled and ready to go. I just need work, weather and time to co-operate and we should have some air under those wheels! I may even skive a day this week if I wake up and the weather is looking good!

Pics and vid when it does happen!

Cheers,
Mark

Good old British bank holiday weekend weather!

I suppose it doesn't help if I tell you I had a great weekend of flying out here in the States - even with my deep medeterranian complexion - I ended up catching a little too much sun !

I used to be pretty good at saying I was working from home or at some sort of obscure meeting when the weather suddenly got good........
