Hi JTEC,

I'm currently using an unbaffled Bison muffler on my 1.60FX but it's too noisy for my liking. Performance is good but the noise is concerning...

What are my options with a JTEC muffler for quieting down my 1.60FX? What level of noise could I expect from a JTEC pitts type muffler?

The 1.60FX is in a 73" QQ Yak that's side mounted.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers
Jason.

Jason,

To be honest we need more information, What type muffler are you running right now (not brand)

small box type?
Pitts style?
How large is it?

Mufflers work on volume and a few tricks. How much room do you have in the cowl, How much money do you want to spend?, What type and size prop are you using. Have you done anything to isolate the vibration? All of this effects noise.

We have developed a new side mounted wraparound muffler, Which means the "can" of the muffler is on the same plane as the engine itself. This may be an option

we can also custom make you a muffler? We can not make a comparision with out all the information

AL Young

Hi Al,

The muffler I'm currently using is a Pitts style. Details are below and a picture is attached.

"FEATURES: Aluminum Pitts muffler with two exhaust stacks.
Engine is mounted lying on its side with exhaust pointing
out the bottom of the airplane.
100% welded construction for less weight.

INCLUDES: One Pitts Muffler with preinstalled 4mm thread pressure fitting
Two 5x20mm socket head Screws

REQUIRES: 4mm allen wrench

SPECS: Length: 3-1/4"
Width: 4-1/2"
Height: 1-3/4" (with exhaust flange)
Stack Length: 3"
Stack position: 2-1/4" (measured from the front of the muffler)
Stack Angle: 115 degrees (measured from the front of the muffler)
65 degrees angle to the rear
Distance between the mounting holes:42mm"

I have had to make a small modification to the muffler on the bottom/end closest to the mounting screws. This was to allow cowl clearance and was only an issue because of the width of the muffler.

There is a fair amount of room in the cowl but I have had to modify the current muffler slightly as above. The prop being used is an APC 18 X 6W. Willing to spend what it takes to quieten the engine down. How much is a flying field worth??? Hard to value that...

The engine is soft mounted using a dubro soft mount.

Can take some actual photos and model measurements if required.

A pressure fitting is not required as I'm using a Perry pump. Can get away with just one exhaust stack too. Would like the muffler to be as light as practical.

Hope this makes things a little clearer.

Cheers
Jason.

Jason,

Well I guess you sent the information. What plane do you have it installed in? Can you send us a couple of low resolution pictures of the engine area sowe can get some reference of what you need and the room you have to work with tho keep it within the cowl.

The measurements I really would like to see is of the cowl area

Al

G'day Al,

I have the engine in a Quique Somenzini 73" Yak 54. It does have a pretty large amount of room in the cowl for a muffler. I'll get some low resolution photos taken this weekend.

Cheers
Jason.

G'day Al,

Please see attached some photo's of my installation. I have put a ruler in some of the pictures to give them some scale.

Let me know if more info is required.
