Ok, How many of you guys have got fined for not running a cat converter? My cousin got fined $6000 for not running one. I heard that they can go up to $10000? He got caught using a screamer pipe and using no cat in the main exhaust, BIG fine!

In Oklahoma that's unheard of. We have no vehicle inspection at all. What they catch guys here for is running farm or oil rig diesel in their street truck. The EPA goes to the sale barns. (were cattle are sold every Friday) They will ask you to start your truck and then have the computer sniff the tail pipe. The farm diesel is also red. So they can pull a sample from your tank if need be. The max fine is $1000 per gallon. Most fines are a lot less but still enough to get your attention.

One option (if you know someone willing to cooperate) is to register the vehicle in a county that has no inspection requirement. It's a stretch sometimes, but it can work.

Some of those fines are ridiculous. The whole point of the system is to reduce emissions, and the typical failure is something logistical, not tailpipe-related.

Wow. Wouldn't it be fun, someone or you walking down the street while someone with a screamer pipe or no cat comes driving down the road letting you breath in their smog. *BUMMER*

its not just that dude, most places allow after market high flow cats, which still pass smog at the pipe, but having them on your car is illegal in california. changing the exhaust is illegal.
that does not mean the car has worse emissions, higher flow exhaust helps with emissions, as long as it has a high flow cat, it increases gas mileage which in turn means better emissions. sure some people go over board and make there cars sound like ass, but **** diesels are loud as **** and no one cares about those.

LOL......glad I live where I do. The population of the whole UP of Michigan is less than 500,000 and this is a big piece of land for that many people. I have no cat on my truck with dual 40 series flowmasters. There are no emission laws here. Man the more I hear about cali the more I want to stay home.......lol. I almost went with a bunch of friends to glamis to ride....................glad I didn't...they all got fined! Spark arresters.....LOL. What the?

this is my truck, and i've debated moving or selling it because it is illegal here, frame height law, california says anything with a gross weight of 7500 to 10000 cant have a frame height over 31 inchs so my truck pretty much sits eather at the shop or in the drive way. but most other states dont have a law like that... the things you learn after you build a damn badass monster truck, lol.

I built my off-road pipe out of a catalytic convertor body. I acquired a stock cat. conv. that had already blown itself out, cut the ends off, shoved a 3" pipe down it, welded the ends back up and put it on the car. The convertor looks just like stock on the outside (because it is) and is the same length of my good cat. convertor so I just swap them out for emissions tests.

thats what alot of people do, well actually they just ram bars through them on the inside for increased airflow... lol. its hard/illegal to "acuire" a used catalytic converter in california, lol. but it happens sometimes

Well, I got mine from some buddies that race their cars (like mine) in SPO and ITE road courses; they've always got old stock parts laying around.

I heard that CARB isn't CARB anymore but now only the ARB as they are trying to push their laws nationwide!
Here in Michigan you can only replace the Cat Con with a cheater pipe only if the Cat Con falls off. Muffler shops can not remove it though. Mine fell off a long time ago.
A few years ago we finally got more laws for street-legal monster trucks as now you can only run a max 38" tire and only lift the truck only so high. At the same time they made changes to the "Assembled Roadster" laws which covers kit cars, street rods, dune buggies, et cetera.
