After reading nearly all the post regarding 5400 kv brushless motor, Quark 33A, gear ratios & gear mesh. I’m still having BIG Problems with my bl motor in my RC18T.

My setup:
Gearig: 10/60
BL ESC: Quark 33A Univesal
Motor: 5400kv bl motor, http://www.rcplanet.com.my/webshaper/store/viewProd.asp?pkProductItem=3293
Batteries: 2S 800mah & 1200mah Lipo.
Run time: 20 to 30 minutes.
Gear mesh: Normal

My Problem is, the motor is TOO HOT to touch ! Even a well tuned ic(nitro) motor is not as HOT as this tiny brushless motor. The ESC only warm! Before this my gearing is 14/60, but change it to 10/60, cause I'm suspecting the gearing is not suitable, causing it run HOT! But still it runs HOT !!!

Is it because I'm only using half to 2/3 trottle ? Or should I buy a new "branded" motor such as mamba, hacker, ect ? Cause as far as I know, some of the "branded" moter is also made in Taiwan/China, like mine !

This is the first time I’m using brushless motor system. I’ve been playing RC since 1991 with all sorts of vehicles, 1/10 on & off road electric & nitro, 1/8 nitro buggy & Monster truck. 50 Size nitro Heli (Hirobo) & electric micro Heli, electric & nitro plane.

Could someone clarify to me what is the Problems ?

I was running a mamba 6400 in my Recoil and it also got very very hot on 2 cell li-po's. On 3 cells it bought the farm. it got so hot the little foam particles melted to it from the track. I bought a 9200kv C4 and it also got very very hot. At one point it stopping running because it was so hot. I installed a heat sink and a little Novak fan and the motor still got warm but nothing like it did before. Now I have a wraith motor with a heat sink and fan on it and it gets like 118ºf after a 5 min race. The wraith is a bigger dia can and seems to heat up less. So if I was you, I'd get a heat sink and a fan. If thats not enough get a wraith motor.

I just use a mini fan like the one that can be found inside the PC, right ! and cheaper also !!
I might try that.

Hopefully there's a way to really ''cool down'' the motor...

Thanks

have you went through your car and made sure nothing is binding up? check all your bearings and also make sure the pinion/spur mesh isn't too tight. i strive for a car that will continue to roll a ways from just a light push.

Already service & lube the bearings.

"pinion/spur mesh isn't too tight. i strive for a car that will continue to roll a ways from just a light push."
A light push wil move it about 3 to 4 inch. Is it ok.?

i guess the light push is different for everyone, i get a few feet out of mine sometimes. how far it rolls depends on the push and you'll know if there is something binding in there depending on you're results. my cars will also roll if placed on even the lightest slope unless i have a spur thats got a few too many rock bites in them, or knobby tires. consider motor drag in all of this.

Do these work...

http://cgi.ebay.com/RC18T-Mini-T-Black-Motor-Heatsink-Cooling-fan-3racing_W0QQitemZ170105153801QQihZ007QQcategoryZ44028QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It seems like it would be a hassle to set up. I would prefer to not use that. Do the regular motor plates with the ribbed heat sink work?

Its better to spend more once then spend less twice. If it really gets that hot a ribbed heatsink might not cut it.

You havnt mentioned what kind of terrain you are running on. You arent running through long grass or anything right?

With motor attached

Your "Heatsink Cooling fan" is great. But I could D.I.Y it with electric heli motor heatsink & attached small motor to it with epoxy !

"You havnt mentioned what kind of terrain you are running on. You arent running through long grass or anything right?"
I mostly run it on tarmac and on badminton court near my house.

"try 12 / 60"
My ratios is even lower: 10/60 !

I just got solutions for it, just cuts a small opening on the wind screen like a nitro car…presto ! Lower motor temperature.

Today I run my car without its' body/cover. I always did that with my nitro car/buggy! During some jumps, my car tumbles and one of the shock absorber cap pops out.
Should I buy a new cap… maybe the threads is ruin. Or just assemble it back gain... what I mean is if I assemble it back on, will it be as good as new...No leakage or anything.

Do the metal shocks absorber really functional or just a “cosmetic”/bling compare with the original ones ? Does it enhance any performance compared with original ones?

I actually thought about doing mine like that. Drilling a few holes in the windshield would lower temps drastically I would think.
