Hi Chasman and Cybertom

I have been following your Steraman and radial engines forums for years but untill now, never posted anything. I have recently purchased a SL150cc 7 cylinder radial and a set of Barron Stearman plans for my next competion model. I intend to scale it up to approx 26.5% to make the engine diamenter and 7" glennis T6 wheels work.

Currently I am in the process of collecting Stearman documentation and remember reading some time ago you guys had put together some great Stearman referance DVDs with Manuals, Drawings and Photos. Would it be possible to purchase a copy of these DVDs from you guys for my project?

I have also sent you both a PM with my email address to be sure, to be sure!!

Regards
Craige Bryson

Hi all,
Just wondering if you all completely disassemble your models each time you go flying....after spending over half an hour to just assemble mine ...

Have any of you made any type of cradle affair to remove and store your wings as a 'sided set' rather than having to completely
de-rig every time?  The 3mm nuts in particular seem to have a mind of their own!

I have seen frames of sorts, but they seem better suited to models that do not have a pronounced stagger like the Stearman has?

Thanks,
AM6.

Hello Guys, Hope you don't mind me adding this to your thread but I wanted to share with all you Stearman fans a video I made this week of my friends Stearman. He had a professional photographer come to do a photo shoot of his Stearman and wanted to get his windmill in the photo too, (he restores windmills as a hobby) so I got a few shots myself and put this video together for him and others to enjoy. All photos and video were taken with my IPhone so it's not super high quality stuff but came out pretty cool.

Looks great!  Waiting for a full report.  It appears that you used something to attach wires to your wings?  Snap swivels or something?

I have attached the rigging using the standard fixings supplied within the Flair Kit....2mm clevises.

In my case I expect the flying / landing wires to be pretty much non functional.
I have only really added them for the effect as without them the airframe looks a little incomplete..
(Pity about the extra drag though....).

About a year and a half ago, I bought a completed Flair PT-17. It had a Saito 180 and lots of lead on the firewall. I decided to install a FS400AR, and got started on it, but got side tracked. Its priority has moved to the top. I got two of the plan sheets, but they are in bad condition. I was looking for someone that might have a set of original plans in decent condition, to get copies made    ( more than happy to cover all costs) .

One of the reasons that this project moved up the priority list is the pending availability of the Eagle Tree Guardian. It looks to be kind of like inexpensive insurance.

Not really any plans like a kit cutters plans, Flair came with a manual and a set of builders plans. With the wood the kit was over $500.00 USD even when it was in mfg.

nice postings on the stearman just a wondering I just purchased a Flair Stearman and all nicely built it had a G-62 on it but I bought it without the engine I plan on putting the Evolution 777 engine on it but one concern I have is that it is fairly heavy it is covered in solar tex and painted with Emeron paint it was 30 lbs. with the G-62 gas engine, was thinking it may be too heavy for the 777 and was thinking maybe the 999 Evo would be a better choice any thought`s or opinions would be appreciated, also read the build for the magazine on the Flair Stearman and wondering about the control horns set up for the elevator as per the plans and wondering if that was sufficiently dependable? anyone had any trouble or failure with this set up?

Charsb,
I agree. When I get Stearman II done we can pick a place and go flying. We should extend this invitation to anyone else that completes their Flair Stearman. We could have our own squadron at the event. I can get hats and polo shirts made up. We should pick an event like War birds over Delaware, Dawn Patrol or the IMAA Valley of the Giants. Could you imagine 3 or 4 of these radial powered Stearman up in the air at the same time in formation.

I'm IN!!!

PS,
I bought an automotive no-contact temperature sensor gun. When the 2-laser beams converge on the surface, your at the correct distance to get an accurate temperature reading. One of my better purchases.

cant`t weight to get my engine on the Stearman and join you guys with your Stearmans was thinking of the war birds over Delaware for 2013? that would be cool.

My Flair Stearman is the exact setup with G62....but mine weighs 25 lbs 10oz. I wonder how your plane got all the way up to 30 lbs.?? the paint really that heavy?

I am not sure, I have not weighed it yet without the engine but I know that the Emeron paint is a 3 part epoxy type paint and the servos he has in the plane are the High tec large 1/4scale size servos. there are 3 of these large servos and one standard for the throttle on the servo tray and it alone weighs just under 1 lb. which I think the servos are OVER KILL one on each elevator they are 173 ounce`s of torque apiece with 6 volt battery, I plan on just using one servo with one CF push rod, and move the tray further forward, I have the Evo 999 on my Corsair and it weighs 36 lbs. and flies it with authority I was thinking of putting the 999 on the Stearman and getting a Moki 150 for the Corsair, but I was thinking of leaving the Corsair alone and getting the Evo 777 but like I said not sure if it will fly the
Stearman at least a scale like manner if it did I would be happy..........Steve

just weighed my Stearman and with out the engine and tank it is 22lbs. with the Evolution 777 add 5.7 lbs. and tank and batt. should be 28lbs. or so, hopefully the engine would be enough power to fly it? even if it flies scale like I would be happy.-Steve

I had the Robart R780 in mine which weighs 7-1/4 lbs. I also had a 32oz. fuel tank, and 3000mh glow driver pack. The weight of my Stearman without fuel was 28lbs. My Stearman was sure to be on the heavy side with that big radial attached. Are you sure your scale is reading correctly? Or do you have a really heavy motor mount? I would think your Stearman would be around 25lbs.

My buddy is flying a Bryon Corsair at 30# with the Evo 777. According to him the plane flys pretty well. Probably not a rocket but sufficient power.

Well, the one you see on my Seidel is probably the last one that Keleo will ever do like that, especially for the German Seidels. Maybe the UCS one he'll try again. I had to send my engine to Keleo for him to put on the collector and he had quite a time getting it on. The German Seidels are off a bit at the exhaust ports and in other places, it doesn't mean they run bad just not consistent.

The engine does run beautiful even with it's minor flaws.
