I'd like to add a question as well. On the Charles River RC web site, where the kahu is described, the designer shows his molds for making the fuse but also says that you could use the "lost foam technique."

I'm thinking about making some spare fuses for my Terminator, currently being built with a stock balsa fuse, and I was wondering specifically how one does a lost foam technique. Here's my guess: what am I missing?

1) make a fuselage shape by shaping and sanding a foam piece, let's call it a plug.

2) Coat the plug with some type of release agent.

3) lay up fiberglass onto the foam plug and bag it (bagging not strictly necessary?)

4) cure

5) cut out a hatch /nose cone and remove it

6) pour in a solvent that dissolves the foam but not the fiberglass.

Questions:

What kind of foam works well for this?

What type of release agent?

What type of solvents might be used?

Last question: commercial ARF's always talk about "gel coated" fiberglass fuses. I even own one. How is that done?

Hal

Go to http://www.favonius.com/soaring/index.htm
for a description of lost foam building.

Gelcoating is a technique that basically uses a thin coating of tinted resin as a surface finish. It's use is generally restricted to molded parts since spraying an existing part would probably result in a non-uniform and somewhat heavy finish.
