Hey all,

test flew my 86" yak yesterday and all went well, very nice flying bird. My question is on cg. The manual suggest a range from 180 -> 200 mm. I got mine right at 188. What I need to know is what is the ideal spot for hovering the plane etc. This is my first large plane but I have been hovering the smaller profiles and such for a while now and it seemed difficult to keep this plane in a hover.

Thanks for any suggestions

Zman,

I seem to recall that the manual stated 188mm was ideal for 3D and pattern. Mine is very close to that and I would say that it is just about right. Mine will hover very easy but it is also somewhat pitch sensitive. So, I may be a little on the tail heavy side. Really, you can do a good check by doing a 45-degree upline and then rolling to inverted. If the plane starts to climb then you are tail heavy. If the plane starts to drop (but not to fast) then you might be just about right.

Hovering on a large plane is a little different. You must keep the throttle pulling the plane to a vertical stance. Short burst seem to have the best results doing this as you learn where the throttle sweet spot is to make it hover. Of course, having good instincts on rudder and elevator help also.

Several other things can make hovering much easier: 1) the right prop. 2) Lateral balance.

David.

thanks for the suggestions. It appears I am right at the 188mm spot. I am using a PT 22x8 prop, is there a better one for hovering?
Thanks

I started with mine at 188. I had to add about 5ozs (battery) deadweight to the nose to get it to balance. I've since removed 1/2 of that weight and flown it. I'm at about 182 now and I like it even better. I think it picked up the response a little bit. Sooo...in my quest to remove all of the weight I've dropped it to 1oz and that puts my CG at about 178. I'll fly it this weekend. But I really don't think it will be hard to fly. My first weight removal made it better.

Thanks

Zman,

If you are using a PT 22x8 that is a good prop....that is what I use! I like it so far. I have a Vess to try also and at this point I am not sure which will have the best combo of "quick response" and thrust.

David.
