There has been some talk of re-enforcing the motor box with some triangle stock. I have not decided if that is a good thing or not. Looking at the re-build post at RC Groups the break was clean at the motor box. If that connection was stronger then maybe both break then. What do you think?

Hey guys I just noticed something funny on my Katana. It seems my motor mount plate is slightly angled. So when the motor is mounted the motor shaft is angled to the right. It looks like it was built this way. Is this normal?

A friend said it was made that way to combat torque from the motor. So should the motor mount plate be even or angled slightly. Thanks.

The thrust angle is built into the motor box, but there's no way for us to know if it's exagerated on your MD vs ours without seeing it. It's probably going to be hard to diagnose this from pictures too.

If you were to take a guess, how many degrees are we talking about here? Shouldn't be much..

Normal. This is to compensate for the angle on the prop thrust.

It looks like 2 to 3 degrees, but I am no expert. I will try to take a picture to show you. If it is off can I just buy a whole new motor box? From the threads above it looks like it’s possible, but I don't know where I would be able to purchase all the stuff I need. Would AtlantaHobby hobbies have everything I need?

Just went to AtlantaHobby site. Looks like they have everything I would need if my was bad.

Sounds A-OK to me

Fly it, you'll see if in a WOT climb it needs left rudder then you got yourself too much right thrust, but it sounds like it's right on the nose (pun intended)

Yes, when i look at mine there is a serious angle when you look at the back of the spinner against the cowl. This is perfectly correct. I was cleaning out my shed and i knocked the plane down straight on the nose cone on cement from 4 feet up. No damage done. It pushed the motor shaft back and the clip came off. These MD`s are very tough.

Bank and Yank,

I noticed that built-in angle on mine and it is intentional. All planes that I've seen either have about 2 degrees built in or else you have to do it with washers. In fact, I had to add a small washer beteen my Thrust 30 & the left side firewall to give mine a little more right thrust. Now it flies straight up at full throttle. I'm actually the only person I know that had to do that on the KMD, but then again, I started out as a pattern flying and I like my planes to be trimmed out just right.

You must be right! i flew about 3/4 of a pack before i even noticed my MD was totally out of trim today. Of course all i was doing was post stall so i was always on the sticks therefore couldn't even feel it.

anybody in the north east that didn't go fly their MD's today should kick themselves in the (censored)

Anyone have PICs of the Torque motor mounted to the Katana MD? I am about to pull the trigger on the Extra 260 and not sure if I wanted to go with the Thrust 30 or the Torque motor....

being 2 identically sized motors, with same shaft diameter, same bolt pattern, roughly same KV AND the fact that they are both mounted behind the firewall (i.e. once mounted, you will never see it again..) esthetically it would make no difference whatsoever which one you choose, of course i am partial to the PA thrust 30 myself having had all suitable alternatives (apache, torque and thrust)

HI I have a Thrust 30 and Quantum 40 amp ESC from you about late June or early July last year, along with 373 metal gear servo's for my PA Katana MD. I have about 35-40 flights on the combination, after the 4 or 5 th flight one of the servo's stripped a gear, figure oh I must have bumped it or something. SINCE then I have had to replace another 3 servo gear sets OR the entire servo due to the fact IT is completely unacceptable for servo's to strip while in normal flight!!!!!! YEP I have quadriple checked to make sure NOTHING is binding that could cause a problem. I have since had a servo CASE crack, YEP case has separated and spreading apart thus allowing the gears to no longer mesh properly. I finally replaced with HITEC 65's and not a single problem whatsoever in the past 15 flights, equal or longer than ANY of the previous # of flights on the SAME surface, SAME radio setup, SAME type flights... HITEC is as smooth as silk and tight as the day I pulled it out of the box, the 373 mg's have an incredible amount of slop in the gear train and or broken cases. I am NOT happy at all with the 373's and unfortunately will NEVER buy another one. SORRY but completely unacceptable servo for this application, maybe for a indoor slow fly foamy..

NOW the ESC has for some unexplained reason went up in SMOKE. SAME 2100 11.1v LiPo packs I have flown in it since the combination arrived, they show to be completely normal and perfect packs, NEVER a problem with them. AGAIN no binding, no hard abusive long runs, only depleteing packs about 50-60% of MAH ratings. I fly slower speeds with some minor 3D flight, basically some inverted spins, harrier, and 20-30 second hovering flight at safe altitudes. Rest of the time is spent performing touch and goes and learning rolling circles. Most of my flights last about 7-9 minutes. MUCH less aggressive flights than shown on PA videos.

OH 12.6 prop that was ordered WITH the motor, ESC, and prop adapter that was recommended for this setup.

With this all said, I must say I REALLY like the Katana MD and Thrust 30, I even plan to purchase another motor/esc (assuming my esc issue was a FLUKE) combo for the PA Extra 260 that I am going to buy in a few weeks

Contact Adad at PA, the servo cases cracking is a known issue, they now use heavier duty black servo cases on all the servos they sell, they'll take good care of you.

Not sure about the esc, i have a quantum 40 that i have yet to use, hope nothing goes wrong with it!

Do you have another esc to test your motor on? maybe a winding shorted or something.
