Daniel, you are one great pilot. I envy you. I belong to a new club with a lot of 3D fliers and they encouraged me to get my first 3D airplane and after reading your messages and seeing your video, I bought the Katana and it just arrived. So wish me luck. I have been flying for 20 years but mostly Sailplanes and fast sleek Pylon racers, some scale planes. So I'm learning new terms like, Lomchevok, Waterfall, Torque rolls, flat spins, etc.

Question:
My plane came with a Torque motor, by ExtremeflightRC. Do you know anything about that motor. Should I return it for AXI for another?

thanks,
michael

Hello Michael!, you will have a lot of fun with the Katana MD, the torque motor is good for it, no need to replace!, what servos you are going to use?, keep us informed!

Daniel

that is a perfect setup.

1) take circlip off motor shaft
2) follow manual instructions carefully
3)Enjoy your plane!

No mods needed, just get a good 1 mm drill bit for drilling the cowl / servos (remember they have CF so you have to drill them carefully), also if you are going to use a spinner consider shortening the motor shaft. With your setup you are going to have a lot of fun, what battery parcks are you going to use??

I have my gear for my Katana MD, here is the list:

GP RimFire 35-36-1000
Electrifly SS 45 amp ESC
Electrifly 11.1V 2100 Mah 20C LiPo
Futaba 3114 servo's
Castle Berg RX-7

I think should be a decent setup, any thoughts??

I dunno about those servos tell you the truth, the minimum servo for optimum performance is hs65HB which is more powerfull and is far more robust. Even it is pushed to it's very limits and must be setup carefully to optimize performance.

its hard to tell as the specs of the servos are below the limit of the recommend servo, it will probably work if you won't use the plane for 3D, and also if you are going to use small servo arms, but if you use the big servo arms and going to fly 3D, there is a lot of chances that you will strip the gears, maybe not!, personally i don't have any experience with the futaba micro servos, but their bigger servos are very strong, so... you'll have to decide if not, i recommend you to get the BB 373MG servos that PA recommends, they have the same specs as the HS65, but the difference is that they are metal gear! i'm using them on my kmd now and they are excelent servos, and they cost less than the hs65!

I checked the specs and here they are:
Futaba 3114
SPECS: 6V 4.8V
Torque: 23.5 oz-in (1.7 kg-cm) 20.8 oz-in (1.5 kg-cm)
Speed: 0.09 sec/60° .10 sec/60°

The PA 373
Torque At 4.8V (6.0V) 1.6kg/cm , 22 oz/in (2.3kg/cm , 28 oz/in)

Speed At 4.8V (6.0V) 0.13sec / 60 deg at no load (0.11sec / 60 deg at no load)

Is there really that much difference in 4.5 oz's???? Also I am going to have to reword the firewall to mount the RimFire, so I was thinking I would use it on another bird, but where in the USA can I order the PA Thrust motor??

Hello Greg, the difference is not much in the torque, its in the gears, the PA is Metal Gear, and the Hitec is carbonite, the futaba is nylon!

I recommend to get the Thrust 30 if you can, you can order directly from PA, shipping isnt too bad i think, another alternative is to get the Torque from Atlanta Hobby. It has a bit less power than the Thrust 30, and doesnt has the rotorkool technology, but it will fit the plane without any mods!

I ordered 2 each 2100 3 cell LiPos Yuntong batteries. Thanks for the building tips. I have a few good bits and have worked a little with Carbone Fiber. Funny, I set up a large network in a CF plant in Sacramento, CA some years ago. Little did I know....

thanks again!

Worked on my Kantana MD this afternoon. Interesting build. Very delicate than most planes. Really have to be careful with CF. I got the aeleron servos done and LG bolted on. The silver solder screws were a difficult fit. That magnet cover was a real trip! Taking a break now will finish it tonight. Hey Daniel, my favorite video from your collection was the Goodbye one. Absolutely awesome! Gave me chills to watch. Very nicely done.
